Just moved: anyone in the Belleville/Mascoutah/Scott AFB IL area?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I just moved to the area and am hoping someone local can recommend some good group rides and/or routes in the area.

Go to the Bike Surgeon in O'Fallon. They are near base and great to work with. They organize lots of rides and can hook you up with the locals. Welcome to the area.

I doubt I'll ever be back, but you never know what the future holds.

I live in the east end of Belleville.

I am a recumbent geek (no beard, a bit of a belly). I don't ride fast, and I have an odd schedule so I don't do the group ride thing.

BUT

There is a small group that parks in the Belleville East High School parking lot, and rides out and back along 161 (towards Scott AFB). That is the only road around with shoulders that are wide asphalt and pretty new most of the way. They ride in the evenings on weekdays, maybe 5-6 PM in the summer. I've never rode with them but I've seen them out many times in the warmer months. It's men & women, 30-somethings ages, maybe 10-12 people. They don't take much water even on hot days so I don't think they go real far; SAFB is only 7 miles down the road.

Plus, now there is an asphalt riding trail along the metrolink rail line that runs between Belleville/SWIC college and SAFB... And once you get away from SWIC there's not many people wandering with small kids or dog-walking out there, as it's basically a rural area. The path is paved asphalt the whole way, with a short stretch on the road for a quarter-mile or so along Shiloh Station Road. So that is another decent route to ride now.

Also Bike Surgeon is probably the best bike shop nearby (for non-recumbent bikes). I'd second asking there.
