Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nashbar has Dura-Ace 9-sp STI levers on sale

In case anyone cares, I noticed in the latest Nashbar catalog that they have Dura-Ace 9-sp STI levers on sale for $229.99/pr. That's one of the cheapest prices I've ever seen for them, and it's only $20 more than their price for the 105 levers (thought the 105's can be had cheaper elsewhere). Oddly, the price on the website doesn't reflect the sale, nor does it list the same non-sale price. Hmmm...

That's a good price. I've seen triple Ultegra 10s STI levers (can be used with double) for about $235 though (I think Lick bike has them)

DA sure would be a step up from my 105's, even few year old DA.

Thankyou for pointing this out, that's an amazing deal.

It's good if someone wrecked one of their shifters in a crash and they don't want to do the whole 10-sp upgrade route. Of course it's also a better price than I bought mine at last summer.

Did it say anything about the quantity available, how long the sale was going on, etc?

I can actually think of good reasons to keep 9s over 10s. (Thicker cogs, $10 chains, etc)

The good things about the new 10s group aren't about the extra cog. Crankset is better and the hubs are an improvement too (you can use these with 9s though)

As one who owns a newish 105 equipped Trek 2100, would this upgrade be worth the $$ if I stay with the 105 derailer - in terms of shift precision?
The 105 shifters seem kind of hit or miss as to the amount of effort required for various shifts.

Thx

Mike

I also like that new style BB too.

Sorry nomo4me, I've never tried the 9-sp 105 shifters. Maybe someone else has.

I'm 105 front, ultegra rear. I've had the pleasure of holding DA, and would justify paying that much just for the feel alone.

I'd assume that DA would make shifts slightly crisper, but I can't be sure since I haven't tried a DA/105 combo before.

Great price.

I just picked up the 9-speed Ultegra upgrade kit from Price Point. $329. Shifter, derailleur, chain and cassette. Great deal.

FAST shipping.

As for 10-speed vs. 9. I was certainly happy with 8 and raced on it for years, but good parts were getting hard to come by easily.

For the cassette spread that I run, the minute change in gear inches in the larger gears, make 10 a waste for me. For others, might be useful.

Eh, I'd want to upgrade the derailer later. But I'd want some tangible benefit before popping the $$ for the shifter upgrade.

Hahaha...no. It really wouldn't be worth it at all.
