Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Whatever age I'm not yet... Google search brought this up:
According to the Oxford English Dictionary middle age is between 45 and 65: "The period between early adulthood and old age, usually considered as the years from about 45 to 65."

Who knows. I'm betting that few other than sponsored racers have the kind of disposable income that MAMILs often (but not always) have. I wouldn't be shocked if the margins on high end bikes were much higher than the margins on lower-end offerings that younger people with less disposable incomes are probably more likely to buy. Is that enough to drive the industry? Who knows? I don't. I do know that cycling is about more than racing, and something about folks saying "it's amusing" to see MAMILs out there riding sort of sticks in my craw.

Yeah, I'm a MAMIL. I'm worse than that. I'm an overweight MAMIL, and I'm sure my appearance in riding garb is eminently memeworthy to those so inclined. But through cycling I'm doing something about it, and that's not a laughing matter. What's funnier, a bunch of overweight middle-aged men hunkered down on the couch eating pizza and beer to a football game, with walking to the fridge for more beer the most activity they'll see in a given day? Or some MAMILs out laying down 50 or 100 or 200 miles a week on their overpriced MAMILmobile bikes?

Personally I not only believe that when I'm cycling my health is better, but I also just really enjoy it. I couldn't give a tinker's crap if anyone thinks I look funny on my bike.

I'm part MAMIL. I'm definitely middle age and I wear cycling shorts, but the rest of my outfit is not cycling specific - high vis T-shirt, dark socks, wingtip shoes.

No, but I respect guys who get on bikes and ride to get in shape. There are so many out of shape people who do nothing but make excuses about why they don't ride (it's dangerous, too early, i don't want to wear tights..etc).

It takes balls to get up early, slap on lycra and ride on roads. It's not something that anybody can do. That being said, if you are a fatty in lycra, please make sure you are eating properly so you can allow your body to slim down.

I don't understand this obsession people have with cycling clothes. The people who don't like us constantly make remarks about "those jerks in the lycra suits" implying that we wouldn't be jerks if we were not wearing lycra. I never got that. I think they're jealous because they can't fit in lycra nor do they have the confidence to wear it. I never think twice about my cycling attire. I wear the norman stuff and go about my business.

I don't understand the obsession bikers have with talking about people talking about "MAMIL". It's sports-clothing with a purpose..move on. What's the alternative? Roadies at age 40 switching over to blue jeans, or sweat pants, or touring shorts? Seriously..who cares? And if you do, perhaps you need a new hobby to fill the down time.

??

Or maybe MAHWWS could be a new trend (Middle Aged Hikers Wearing Wool Socks)

RMIL? (retired man in lycra) CMIL (commuter man in lycra) or RWIL, CWIL? Your online name is gender confusing (to me, at least)

Oh, yeah. I'm 51 and wear lycra when riding my bicycle. I guess that makes me a MAMIL. several steps up the evolutionary ladder than most people would peg me. LOL

caloso because I went to Cal and oso means bear. I'm male, still working, but hope to retire within 5 years, depending on my kids' college tuition situations.

Jesus Christ is that what's become of Bicycling.com? It's an abomination of ads and auto play videos. I couldn't even scroll through the whole thing before my computer started freezing up.

Anyway, I thought a requirement of being a MAMIL was having a big fat beer gut, while still squeezing into the tightest possible kit.

Then I don't qualify. Haven't had one since 1998.

AGIL = Ancient Guy In Lycra

VOMIL = Very Old Man In Lycra

He!!, at least my resting heart rate is low, blood pressure normal and the knees are still OK. And i mostly eat what I please. And riding makes me smile, even if i'm not KOM.

Confession = most months in Seattle, i prefer wool.

Is ski season here yet??? It's a LaNina year. So for 5 months i hope to be OMISS = Old Man In Ski Suit

edit: as a dietary concession to lower carb intake, i'm considering switching beer for sippin whiskey.

Does MAMIL count if you're fit? And if so, does it imply you just shouldn't ride bikes or anything after an arbitrary age?
