Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm having a hard time pulling the trigger on a new big ring, so before I do, I thought I'd ask about your mileage before you guys replace them.

FWIW, we're talking about a Force 22 50 tooth ring.

I don't ride SRAM, but honestly a chainring should be lasting you 30K miles or more.

I have 15,000 miles on a Red 22 50T and not signs of wear.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I have more miles than I can remember on a vintage Sugino, but when my Sram Force chain wore out at 3k, I started getting a bit worried about my big ring.

The tips of the teeth show some minor wear, but the valleys look good.

That's a hundred bucks I can spend on something else now.

My bike is 10 years old has more miles than I can fathom and original big ring. I'm in Illinois so I basically always ride in the big ring.

Chains are a lot cheaper than chain rings or cassettes.

Chain lasts 3K miles. Cassettes around 10K. Chainrings 30K. YMMV.

That sounds a little short for cassette wear, but if most of the riding is flatland, a few cogs could wear out faster than if the terrain is more varied.

25-30k miles is about normal, if you spend most of the time in the big ring.

$95 is probably more accurate for a Sram Force big ring.

No.

A little over $100 on Amazon. More from Competitive Cyclist.

The Force chain I recently replaced was 35 bucks.

Unless you are at 25k-30k miles, it's unlikely you need a new big ring.

The ring on my oldest bike has over 50k miles on it, with very little attention ever given to things like chain wear.

The teeth are worn to roughly half their original thickness, but i never had any issues.

IMO, something is seriously wrong if you're not getting at least 20,000 road miles on a ring.

I generally count on 20,000 miles. Even then, they usually function pretty well, but the valleys begin to wear into the structure of the ring. At that point, why tempt fate? Chainrings are (relatively) cheap.

Maybe your faith has gone away and the cycling gods are punishing you. Maybe you need some churching up.

Of course all of these responses do not take into account your shifting habits, or the power you put out. Personally I just changed both rings on my SRAM Red Cranks this year. They were from 2012 but I took a year and a half off in the middle. No way I have 10k on them. While mine looked ok I was having shifting issues at one point and I think I damaged a few teeth so I decided to change everything and make sure it was all good. Got new FD, new rings, new chain and new cassette...shifts like a dream again and no dropping. Force and Red use the same rings FWIW.

Here's the solution for those of you who wear your aluminum (or is it aluminium? ) chainrings down early.

Surly stainless steel chainrings available for a variety of BCDs and tooth numbers.

Drivetrain | Parts and Accessories | Surly Bikes

I believe WolfeTooth Components also makes some.

I ride 6000 miles a year or so. I do have multiple bike so not all on one bike. But in my lifetime, I've never replaced a road bike chain ring due to wear.

I can verify that the big ring will start skipping at 30-50K on a new chain.

I just replaced my 2010 Force 50 tooth at 15,000 or so. Was getting some mis-shifts and a couple teeth looked damaged. Seemed to correct the problem. Not sure where the damage came from.

I figure that’s about right. Given multiple bikes, and upgrading components, I’m not sure I’ve put more than 50k on one set of road chainrings.

Even if you have only one bike, 30-50k is 10 years of riding even for a reasonably avid cyclist.
