Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hub noise and burning smell

Experiencing a grinding noise in the hub.
Happens at speed primarily and when not pedaling.
Started to smell some burning even.
Bearings going out?
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

I've got a great idea. Take the wheel off, pull the hub apart, and have a look at it.

So have you pulled the wheel off yet? What are you seeing?

That exact thing happened to a friend recently. We were going down hill and his hub started screeching. It made no noise when he pedaled but started up again whenever he coasted. It was a mavic. He said that had happened to his wife's wheel one time and the hub was dry; needed to be greased. Nasty noise.

delilo,
Again, have you removed the wheel from the bike at least? Have you looked at it? Did you turn it with your hand? Was there anything obviously visible? Did it have a gritty feel when you turned it?

None of us are there except you. You're going to have to do something and provide feedback if you actually want some help.

Pulled the wheel, didn't see much, talked to few people, likely a freehub body issue.
Sorry for the delay, busy with so many other things.

Another question, if I ditch these wheels, what are some decent middle of the road wheels to go to?

Thanks all

"Mid level" and "decent" are two subjective terms.

I'd suggest stating budget, your weight, your intended riding scenarios.

Mavic free hubs are infamous for this issue- usually squealing.

Regular oiling takes care of the problem- to a point.

In this video, they neglect to point out an easily lost washer that goes between the hub bearing and the free hub.
