Aero Helmet for Commuting

I am thinking about upgrading my helmet to an aero one in order to protect my head from the elements through the winter, while also decreasing wind resistance for speed.

What would be a good aero helmet that can do this, but also ventilate well? So far I have only found this one that GCN recommends. It has a slider to open up ventilation in the front, but not sure how much it would help.

Or should I just look for one to use only while raining / snowing, and using my existing one for dry conditions?

That will work just fine.

Would I be able to mount a helmet mount light kit on it? Like this one I just got:

This is mine. Supposed to be aero. I love it.

It may be worth noting that GCN does not do reviews, as a matter of policy. I would imagine that allows them to avoid conflicts of interest with their extensive paid-promotion work ...

Personally, I use a Bontrager Ballista MIPS for the majority of my riding, even when the temperature gets to 35C/95F.

I have it too. Used it a total of once so far, honestly, through no fault of its own.

FYI if you get an aero helmet and then mount a helmet light on it, it will no longer be very aero.

Good idea! Some of the guys around here use aero helmets for cooler temperatures. Personally I just use a snowboard helmet when it's super cold - though when it's cold enough for that, I have so many layers that I'm kind of anti-aero.

To effectively mount the helmet light, you'll generally need some kind of vents (holes) that go the whole way through on the top of the helmet. From the website pictures, I cannot tell if that helmet has them or not.

But they market it as being able to push a lot of air through the limited vents.

Jesus. A $250 helmet better do something cool, like obliterate small animals or distracted drivers in your path with lasers.

I still want lasers.

I've got a BBB Tithon. Used it all of last winter, definitely keeps the head warmer. About $75.

Never tried mounting a light, but it does have two ventilation holes on either side front and back, so I suppose you could rig a light mount on either side.

That light looks like one of the ones with an external battery pack. I've got one of these (a cheap LED I picked up off Amazon several years ago) and it's heavier and a little more awkward having a battery pack and the LED head itself strapped onto the helmet than a single-piece light with a built-in battery.

Here's one with a light pre-mounted. I wear mine all the time, even when using the indoor trainer.

I like the idea of being able to close vents and aero for cold winter commuting. Bell helmets fit me well.. with the shield, a nice winter option here: https://www.amazon.com/Bell-Star-Hel...pro&th=1&psc=1
