Replacing crankset help

After about 500kms on a stock giant contend I noticed my crankset wobble from side to side and making sounds it has those octalink style or square tapered bb's(not sure) WC I'm never comfortable with, anyway I plan to switch to a 105 or tiagra crankset with appropriate BB. Im sticking with the same gearing 50/34. I checked shimanos site and says 105/tiagra are 10spd cranks I have a 6 spd. Would there be a problem with the chain or shifting if I just change the crankset?

It is not a 6-speed.
It isn’t octalink or square taper.
It has the same bb as 105 and tiagra.
The benefits from replacing vs fixing what you have are marginal at best.

I'm guessing OP has the lower end Contend, which is stocked with an FSA Tempo crankset, which is indeed uses a Square Taper BB.

That said, OP, you should be fine if you go with a 105 or Tiagra crankset.

you might just need to re-torque the crank bolts to eliminate the wobble, I would not jump to a quick replacement until you know the diagnosis.

If you are going to change to a 9 or 10 speed crankset you might also need to change to a 9 or 10 speed chain since the spacing between the big and small front chain ring will be closer.

I'll set it aside as a backup, I've had an octalink on my MTB which looks basically like a sqr tapered and had the same problem after a few miles and climbs. I find hollowtech bb's stronger imho.😀
