Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

From last weekend ... us in our Christmas presents to each other. We each got a long-sleeved and a short-sleeved Audax Australia jersey. The blue background is for Australia and the colour blocks represent the States ...

Riding my bike with 650x48 on at the moment. Did around 130km today.

Started off riding the bike paths along the beach, heading south. Been checking out places on Google Earth to explore. Cut inland to another bike path which went around a lake. There are some hard old limestone roads beside this, so I jumped the fence! and rode those instead.

After a bit of riding around an industrial area, I found the next bike path I'd been looking at online. Headed further south until I came to another limestone/gravel track which went east. That followed around another lake; a full gravel loop which was pretty fun to ride. No one else out that way.

Crossed a main road and took it easy riding some old semi-rural roads I hadn't been down before. Headed further east until I hit the suburbs again and the main bike path along the freeway. Headed north along that. Came across half-a-dozen roadies, so I sat a bit back behind them all the way into town.

A good day on the bike. Now thinking about tomorrow's ride!

The Christmas stuffing has begun, we have a lot of rando rides coming up in Jan so I'm determined to work off as much food and drink as I can. 40km tonight, out into an unpleasant wind, nice cruise home.

That Audaz OZ kit looks great.

We like the jerseys too. They're bright and distinctive.

And yes, I'm cycling and running to try to keep the weight somewhat normal with all the Christmas treats about the place!

Just FYI - Rowan and I have created a Facebook group for anyone who is interested in doing a Century-A-Month challenge. We completed a Century-A-Month this year ... even though the last two centuries were unexpectedly difficult ... and are planning to try it again in 2018.

It's a casual thing, one 100-mile ride each month, no prizes or anything, just a personal challenge.

You keep track of your own distance, talk about your rides, talk about the challenges involved in doing a century-a-month, and post pics.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/Century.a.Month/

There will also be a Century-A-Month thread in Long Distance as usual, and we'll be posting there as we have done all year this year, but we figured we'd see how the Facebook group would work as well.

Yes, very nice jerseys, not busy with too many words or small things on them. But bright for helping visibility.

I always eat too much during the holidays. Merry Christmas.

Meanwhile, back in the Northern Hemisphere...Decent weather for riding on the West Coast of Wisconsin: mostly dry pavement with areas of sand, and temperatures sitting around 20F/ -7C.

Saturday: Nice and sunny! I hit up a residential road with a nice little climb and did a stretch on a gravel trail. Then, I took a trip with a different bike out to get some groceries. Day total: 24 miles, 699 feet.

Sunday: The clouds and wind came in, and there were a few little snowflakes. I did an interesting non-climbing route with a mixture of roads and MUPs (which are nice this time of year - very few people.) Total: 21.5 miles, 397 feet.

We're supposed to get a bit of snow tonight, followed by cooler weather (highs 0-5F for a while.) If I'm feeling well, I may still try for a Christmas day climb.

I've had off most of the past week, so lots of riding for me. The weather has been odd. Everyday, except for Christmas day, has been damp and foggy. Wednesday did 33 miles around Davis Is. Thursday the temps popped up about 10 degrees. It was a very humid and unpleasant 33 mile Davis Is. ride. Friday I got bored just going to Davis Is so I braved morning rush hour traffic and went to Picnic Is first for 39 miles. Saturday I did a more traditional S. Tampa tour for 41 miles. Sunday was the heaviest day of fog. I rode to Weedon Is., however, in the middle of a three mile bridge I got a flat. It was not fun to change, but completed the ride for 40 miles. Christmas day there is too many family things to do, so no rides today.

All indoors, 23 miles yesterday, and 16 miles today. It just keeps getting colder, and I'm facing up to the fact that I don't like riding in the cold. I ride hard indoors, but just can't do the miles and the miles as measured aren't fully equivalent anyway. Power is all that really matters.

Saturday, 47.5km along my usual training route. Very happy with this ride because this is the first time I broke the 30km/h average speed, though only by a little bit (avg speed 30.1km/h). Guess all that suffering on the smart trainer paid off.

Didn't do any riding on Sunday as I drove back to my hometown to spend a week with my parents. I thought about bringing one of my road bikes back with me (I have a roof rack for that) but I did not like idea of having my bike up there for the whole 360+ km trip -- a single mistake will be all it takes to destroy a very nice bike. So instead I just folded up my Dahon and brought that home instead.

Monday: Woke up early in the morning to ride to and attempt this segment:
https://www.strava.com/segments/933016

Unfortunately access up the hill was closed due to repairs from a landslide about 2 months ago. Bummer; wish I knew about it. So instead I just rode 13km around town before heading back.

I slacked and finally got my December metric century today: https://www.strava.com/activities/1328571349. Loving my new winter riding shoes (Shimano MW7s); no more cold feet!

My surgeon said I'm allowed to ride a bike (at low intensity), and I was visiting my parents, so I grabbed my mom's comfort hybrid for a spin around the neighborhood and parks and whatnot.

Normally not really my idea of a great ride, but it was a heck of a lot better than nothing.
