Go to MFP (MyFitnessPal) ... they are good, but go into the forums and hang out there for 6 months. You'll see it all!

My troll-sensor is broken now after being there for a bit because I'm not longer sure if the astoundingly ludicrous ideas some people have are actually real or if they're trolling. And sadly, I suspect that many are actually real.

Anyone who isn't an American wonders that too. In other words, those of us living in other countries find it very odd that so many Americans go for those procedures, and seem to treat them like an every-day kind of thing.

Don't you all have poop kits that arrive in the mail the day you hit 50?

Yep. AARP card and the box of Cologuard.

Hey, don't diss the AARP -- this discounts can be surprisingly good. The only thing that sucks is qualifying for membership in first place.

I'm not a member but I'm old enough to qualify, I like the magazine, and they sponsor some of my favorite shows: "Quincy", "Matlock", "Diagnosis: Murder".

The secondary benefit of 'doping' with a tablespoon of sodium bicarbonate is a fairly thorough system dump, so to speak.

Sounds like the perfect recipe for severe dehydration and electrolyte balance, which can cause serious consequences.

I tried taking a laxative before a ride and I bonked after 60 miles.

If I'm not quite on schedule because my routine has been upset I do the following.

24 hours before leaving on ride

2 large very warm glasses of water
1 large mug of Smooth Move Tea
2 large very warm glasses of water

Once the magic potion has done its thing, you don't need to hit the can until the next day. One side effect that I noticed is that I felt great. However, I couldn't tell if I felt good because my system was empty or because I'd flushed out everything out with nearly 2 gallons of fluids in 12 hours.

Anyhoo, I was wondering if anyone intentionally uses an equivalent process before all day activities where TP won't be accessible all day -- seems like it might be handy for any endurance activity. On the other hand, I'm wondering if fully emptying your pipes might be a good way to set yourself up to bonk.

On a totally unrelated note, I need to find a way to get this stuff into my buddy's drink...

Routine is good in this IME. A Dr. told me once that after breakfast is the best time for N2, I followed his advice and it's been "every day, once a day" for me since.

CliffordK 01-13-18 10:11 PM

I usually use the can once a day or so, unless I'm sick. :P

So, before a long ride, hit the can, bathe, and then get ready and go, and I'm usually good all day, and all night if necessary.

I don't think I'd choose anything more draining.

Yep. Add in our physicians' compulsion to constantly check out our prostates and to squeeze female breasts into mammography torture devices and one might begin to suspect there's some sort of cult thing going on.

But at least we get flu shots, though this year's flu had the audacity to not match up well with the vaccine. We really need to improve the quality of our flu.

:foo:

And the flu you have now is the Aussie Flu. We had it last August/September. It's a bad one that, unfortunately, killed several people. Our flu shots weren't up to protecting people from it either.

We did try to warn North America.

Personally, I just drop the kids off at the pool, than hop in the shower real quick before my all day rides.

I’m of the same thought that a lot are; a total flush is an easy way to get dehydrated even if you’re diligent and careful.

I recall there being more or less of a wave of new nutrition supplement vendors at Interbike some 15-20 years ago, and after talking with several of them at length there was some repetition of the advise to avoid solid foods for a long ~24 hours before an event.
I've known that the digestive system and it's adjustable volume competes for space in one's midsection with circulatory apparatus, so I would not be surprised to see on-bike performance improvement when such volume was kept at a minimum.
The large intestine is 20 feet long and is packed in with more u-turns than you could count, so it's easy to see how a rider in relatively fixed position on the bike could cause some kinking effect on the intestine during sustained hi-effort pedaling.
As far as electrolyte balance, that is controllable with the appropriate beverage mix for the conditions, but one must experiment to find what works best. And I sure wouldn't recommend any sort of extreme measures beyond the recommended fiber content and pre-ride coffee to reduce one's intestinal volume.

I must be one of the exceptions. After getting flushed for a colonoscopy, I feel great. My thinking is much clearer for that day of the procedure. I am guessing it is because all the toxins are flushed out of the body. That said, I would never attempt to do a complete flush like that in preparation for a ride as your strength is going to be compromised for a day or two until the body resets with the proteins and carbs. I've always considered it to be a blessing to have a regular good old "go" before a ride, especially for something like a century. I have stubborn bowels no matter how much fiber and water I take in so it doesn't always happen for me

rosefarts 01-23-18 11:16 AM

We're about the only country that that suggests the butt scope for everyone over a certain age. It really should be poop scan 1st and colonoscopy if there are concerning results. A perforated colon can be fatal and is always serious. Also be careful with bouncy balls, *****s, mason jars, and beer bottles.

There is scientific evidence on the health value of fasting. So if you really want to clean yourself out, don't eat for 36-48 hours. Do not do this anywhere close to a big (or even small) ride though.
