First Century--braggin' and am I nuts?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First Century--braggin' and am I nuts?

Hi folks--

The braggin' part:
I just completed my first century this afternoon. I'm pretty pleased with myself because I just started riding two months ago. I had planned on a metric, but decided at the last minute to take the plunge. I'm tired, but not as much as I thought I would be. We'll see how tomorrow goes.

The crazy part:
When I pulled into the finish of the century today, I clicked the computer from clock to distance and it said 92 miles. So, I rode around town for another 8 miles to even out the numbers to an actual 100. Am I nuts or do others do this too? I didn't want to brag about a century, when I hadn't quite hit 100.

How cool is that? Congrats man! Skipped a metric and went right for the gold!

I did the riding around town thing the other day to get an even 40miles out of my ride. Its not 100, but still.

Again, congrats. That's an awesome accomplishment!

I think lots of riders do it. I have done it.

First off, was this an organized event? The Moab Century gets a lot of flack from many riders for a route that doesn't actually do 100 miles. Was it supposed to be 100 miles? If so, check to make sure your computer is calibrated properly.

Yep...it was an organized event (www.rockrivertour.org) I mentioned it coming up short to the organizer and he just kind of shrugged but then made a good suggestion on a route to fill up the 8 miles.

Good point about the computer...it's calibrated right and I've checked it against my truck's odometer on a 3 mile course....seems to be pretty precise.

Congrats..SOmething to brag about...at least the first time...Yesterday, I did 88 miles..been a poor quarter for long rides...mostly under 60 miles...
yesterday, about 70 miles everything started aching...but, I did my 88 in order to get back home...felt good in a achy kind of way..
when do we all feel like , how much more of this can we take...?
I find get off the bike for 10 minutes or so and the feeling disapates...but, it comes back about 15 minutes later...plus, a power drink does not hurt.

shrugged? That's disappointing.

We're not talking about getting 92 ounces of soda when you think you're getting 100. Most cyclists WANT that *century*... it's a special accomplishment the first time. And like you, I think most people wouldn't round up 92 to 100. Maybe 98-99.

Oh well, sounds like you had fun and got your 100. Cool.

I always round up. The last century I did turned out to be something like 32 miles. Really kicked my arse though so I didn't feel bad about exagerrating a little.

Congratulations and good luck on the next one.

Congrats! and your cycling computer is wrong. I don't care what instructions they give you all cyclecomputers need to be tweaked. Find a liitle used state highway and check your mileage, you'll
be surprised. Oddly enough auto mileage is always right one. I know I've checked.

My first century, I was riding with my uncle, we were getting to the finishing point and I pointed out to him that my speedometer (cheap ~$15 thing, so it very well coulda been off) said only 97.5. He figured that even if it was wrong, might as well go the extra 2.5 miles so we're not lying when we say we rode 100 miles. So we went right past the end of the century and turned back after 1.25 miles.

On discrepancies between official distances and distances that we get on our computers: Over the course of roughly 100 miles, how much difference can be made by a bike moving optimally through the corners? I can't imagine it is much, but is it entirely negligible?

First, congrats.

Second, if the ride was advertised as a century, then you need to check the settings on your computer (i.e., do you have the right tire size). That, or you skipped some rest stops (i.e., some rides place the rest stops off the main route to keep "traffic jams" down and you'll only get to a even 100 miles if you actually visit each one).

Good for you! I did my first metric century this weekend, and although it wasn't the same distance, it still feels like an accomplishment. Now I'm going to start getting ready for 75 mi and then eventually my first imperial century.
