Black is what you get by default - the lazy non-choice. If you're not sure whether you want it, I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to find white shoes, but if it's an option in the model that works for you, by all means get them!

My Sidi shoes are ten years old, a little dated but in pretty good shape. I'm liking the looks of the new fizik shoes so considering a change. Was just wondering if black is oldskool or not.

The one that matches your helmet, gloves and socks.
Otherwise red, as we all know red goes faster.

It's not 2001 anymore. Forget the white.
Black is classic. Always in style.
Neon yellow, orange, or blue if you've got to be trendy. But the shoes will probably last longer than the trend.

White - the blood dripping from road rash shows up much better.

Actually, I just buy whatever is on sale when I need new shoes - had black and brown for years on SPD pedals, been white on SPD-SL just because of sale prices.
I'm now buying into the "moving parts should be high visibility" - but can't quite convince myself to wear hi-viz green shoes. So, I'll probably stick with white - but maybe the next time I need new ones, some with hi-viz accents will be on sale.

Probably black.
I only wear white in nice weather and when I'm in top condition. So basically during race season. White's too pro-looking to wear if I'm 15 lbs overweight.
(I have two pair black road shoes and one pair white.)
(edit: I fear this reply sounds like "you ain't good enough for white shoes." I just meant "black is way more versatile."

The answer is not black and white. Or is it?
