Powertap P1 Right pedal question

I just got a set of P1 pedals and the first time I took them out I got "right pedal missing", "low battery" and power levels all over the place including dropping to zero. The second time I took them out I only got the "right pedal missing" at the very beginning again which I have read is somewhat normal as the right is the slave. Everything else seemed to work fine except the following:

I was doing one leg spins and when I was just left I would get a balance of 100% and a normal power reading. With the right I had a normal power reading still showing up, but the balance was at nothing for either side. Is that normal? I feel like it should register something or else how can the pedals know the balance in the first place?

Thanks for any feedback

I always get the right power meter missing message on my garmin when I first start, after I push the button acknowledging it no problem, it sometimes comes back on if I stop for awhile. The balance L/R always works even with one leg pedaling.

So if this continues should I send them back?

Is the firmware with your P1 up to date? I think it went away after I updated the firmware on my P1 but I haven't been riding outside since Nov my Garmin picks up my kickr for power when I ride indoors.

I will check on the firmware

Firmware is up to date. So that isn't the issue

The "right pedal missing" is a known Garmin issue. Are you using a Garmin head unit? It might happen with other units, I'm not sure. I click through it, and then have no issues. Power is reported correctly. I think this has to do with the left pedal being the master. Only it communicates with your head unit. The right pedal sends info to the left.

I normally spin the pedals a few times before turning my Garmin on.

Otherwise I get it but as mentioned, proceed and it works as it should.

Took them out again today. No right pedal missing message. I am not worried about that, what I am questioning is the fact that when i spin one leg it picks up the left balance at 100% and a normal power reading, but when I spin with just the right I get no balance registering, but a normal power level.

The right pedal missing thing is normal. I have the P1's and called Powertap when I first saw the message (last year I think). PT said that both pedals were broadcasting to my Garmin via the left pedal. It is a bit wonky, but I still see proper pedal balance as well as total power.

Hope this helps.

Powertap P1 update

I’ve just got a set of these today, my garmin is up to date and the pedals are up to date and i still get that right pedal missing message. Apparently this was addressed in the 30.029 update in March ...... or not as it happens ! Anyone got a proper solution ? Waiting for PT to get back to me in the meantime. The power balance is all over the place as well, 70/30 left and right with a nice smooth circle for right pedal and a mess for the left.

I've had P1s for a couple of months and I get this off and on. Occasionally it doesn't happen but most rides it does...everything is up to date for me as well. It's annoying but post ride it doesn't look like it shows up n the data so annoying but all good?

Powertap P1

Been on to powertap and a bloke at Saris, think they’re a bit stumped as well but suggested changing the end caps for the batteries. I was a bit dubious as wasn’t sure how this would change things. Anyway, got replacement caps, put them on and been out twice now without and error message at all. Fingers crossed. As other people have said though, date not compromised
