Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm slow

This is not really a rant in any shape or form, just thought I would share what happened. I was comming back from my usual 30 mile ride. Ride is pretty hilly, it's a loop around Chobbot lake, except the last/first 2 miles which are flat and are in the city. Anyway my legs were pretty much gone at that point. I just turned left on a green light, when I noticed there is someone on my back. I was going about 20 mph with some headwind. I slowed down a bit, and they pulled on my left. So here is the scene me in my school jersey, bib shorts, clip in pedals, and this dude in a shirt, regular shorts and riding with platform pedals. Ridding side by side. We started to talk, and he turned out to be a pretty kool guy. From what he told me he was just ridding about 3-4 miles a day, for exercise, picking the biggest hills he can find. I sudgested a clip in pedals to make his life easier. Anyway it was late and I said I'm going to pick up speed. He jumped on my wheel again, at least this time he said he is going to do it. I hit 20 mph again, to my suprise he was able to hang on. Although he was starting to slip back after few blocks, I think. Morale of the story, I need to train more, and not all people who jump on your wheel are aholes. They just might don't know it's a bad etiquete and dangerous.

Key stat here is he was on mile 4 and fresh and you on mile 30. Had he started with you and put 30 in you would've dropped him long ago.

20mph is not serious speed. I have a couple of friends who are grandmothers and have no trouble drafting me at 20mph for an hour or more on the flats. If you want to drop someone, try taking it up to 30mph, or head up a long hill.

For many people like me, (and speaking for many other cyclists), 20mph (32km/h) is a pretty serious speed and when I ride down Beach Rd (which is like a main cycling road in melbourne), the average speed of groups is probably only 18mph.

Ah but you're forgetting to look at the title of the thread: "I'm slow"

And no, 20mph is not slow. I think it's a decent speed.

To quote a friend of mine, "I can do wonders sitting on the right wheel."

Putting a positive spin on this...the guy you met just found that your wheel was the right one to sit on.
