Mavic Ksyrium Elite S or Ultegra 6700 Wheelsets
Hi there knowledgeable ones,
I would like to get your opinions on the above two wheel sets. I know the 6700 are only 10sp hubs which isn’t that big of a draw back since I doubt I would be upgrading to 11sp (famous last words). Both are listed on CL and both appear to be in very good shape. The reviews I can find on these wheelsets are about the same with the Ultegra wheelset getting a slight nod. Both sets are listed around $300 with the 6700 coming with Hutchinson tubeless tires. Not sure of the advantage of a tubeless tire on a road bike but I loved them on my mtn bikes. These wheels would be replacing a set of velocity rims and hubs that seem slow as molasses compared to a set of roval fusee I had.
So any thoughts you might have on these two wheelsets, especially if you had both would be appreciated.
TIA - Rick

I’d steer clear of the Ksyriums due to their proprietary spokes and a tendency to crack at the rim near the nipple. I had a set of Eite S for a year and vowed never again. At least they were under warranty, too bad warranty repairs took 3 months to get sorted out. On the plus side those were the wheels that got me into building my own wheels and I’d never go back!

Another vote for 6800s. Bulletproof, reasonably light, inexpensive wheels with great hubs and high build tension. Downsides: tight tire fit and proprietary spokes.
