Wool prices surge to four-year highs as supply drives demand

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Interesting. Sounds like China might be planning to compete with the boutique domestic merino wool apparel makers in the US and Europe.

Usually with competition that's a good thing. But with the peculiar and inconsistent sizing of many Chinese apparel makers it would be even trickier than usual to purchase merino wool jerseys, etc.

Good. Absurd that it's $70 for a wool tshirt. Can't wait for some market adjustments with the new players.

It's a popular fiber/material for lots of cycling-specific clothing.

Four year high. So the raw material costs as much as it did 4 yrs ago!
Big deal.
Good news if you are a sheep farmer though. Might keep the wolf from the door a bit longer or delay thoughts of switching to a different "crop".
Less than half the amount of sheep here in New Zealand compared to 30 yrs ago.

You might not believe this, but some people dress in wool before they get on their road bikes for a day (or even an hour) of cycling.

Kind of like how there were threads about how much it costs to order shifters from other countries has something to do with riding a bike.

What the actual Feck?

That article is from nearly 3 years ago.

In the wool industry that's ancient history.

For a more up to date state of the market see:

I guess it makes a change from the 10 year old zombie threads.

Maybe now the wool crowd will wise up and start wearing Yak. It's superior in every way except how it smells when wet.

I was offered a free sample of a horsehair jersey. It actually made me faster. I couldn't wait to get home, take it off and rub myself down with liniment.

We had a rat living in our laundry this month (finally got the little guy Saturday night), so I pulled up that episode to humour the kids.

I've got some nice IceBreaker merino kit (they don't make cycling clothes anymore). They've just been sold to the company that does The North Face/Timberland/Vans so you should be seeing it in tacky malls all over the US soon. I hope they get back into cycling gear.

If only we could somehow harness all the spare dog hair to produce less expensive "wool" jerseys...
