Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Funny tidbit from the Colorado ride. My friend and I both grew up in Texas. We were riding gravel/dirt roads and paths on 25mm tires. It was all super hard pack paths with tiny gravel. No problem at all. I talked about the gravel roads in North Texas and how much they would suck on these tires (did it once on the Domane for a metric century) and how great all these roads/paths were. He said that all the Colorado riders he knows look at the gravel bike craze and say "Just ride your damn road bike. What do you need a special gravel bike for?" It's all about perspective.

Speaking of which, I need to get some 35mm gravel kings before I sign up for another gravel ride here. I'm looking forward to the annual night gravel ride in August where you can do a metric century in the cool of night. Especially with my dynamo lighting.

Still undecided on which direction I'll go, but at this point the most likely candidates are: dual-power pedals (Assioma, most likely, but still the possibility of the PowerTaps) or a Power2Max NG Eco crankset. If the CleverTraining sale is 20%, as it has been in previous years, the price will be pretty close between the three options. If P2M decides to have a festive little sale of their own (they've done discounts, thrown in chainrings and free shipping, etc, in the past), then the crankset will be more attractive as I'll get to keep my Speedplays.

Whatever - I just want to get on with it and ride my damn bike. Speaking of which, we should see ~60° and moderate sun for the next few days, so there's hope that even the snowbanks will be gone in short order. I am also producing much less mucus and better able to breathe, so maybe I'll be ready ready to ride in short order, too.

[/bike crap hand-wringing]
I've been waiting for the CT 20% off as well but it doesn't look like they are doing it this year, at least not at the start of May. Looking for breadcrumbs when/if they might run the next one.

I like Coke fine, but I don't drink it often. The 20oz bottles are handy on road trips.

Definitely tough to beat an ice cold glass bottle of cane sugar coke!!!

I've been trying to cut down lately, though. 1 bottle a week would be good.

It's only worth what the next buyer is willing to pay for it.

Grateful to have a day off the bike. I can actually stand up, move around, and do things Wrenching is on the agenda for this afternoon. It's unfortunate it has to be that way, but it seems that it does.

Because three successive days in the saddle wears me out these days. I don't know if it's my diet, my age, the climate, or a combination. While riding, I feel great. An hour later I'm usually asleep, and then tired the rest of the day.

Ok, need adult advice here. Long story short: apparently some people in my company can not be trusted with company cards, so we had to all hand them in. They said if you have travel expenses for a trip, you can get a temp card from them for that purpose. I only use mine for travel anyway, so I asked the boss about getting my own card to earn points and just get reimbursed for expenses. (There may be a tax issue here I'm missing that someone can fill me in on.)

So now I'm looking at getting a card to earn miles for flights. My inclination is to go with an AA card because I already have an account collecting miles with them and do all my flying with them, so it makes sense to be able to double up. Am I being myopic here by not looking at other options? It doesn't seem like most travel points cards play nicely with airline specific miles.

I decided that I really wanted to keep my Speedplays so I stopped waiting and went with a Power2Max/Rotor crankset. It cost 5 bucks more than the Assioma Duo would have at 20% off.

Coke addict here. I can. I typically buy the bottles to stay away from HFCS. I have recently bought the 7.5 oz cans in an effort to reduce dependency. Real sugar coke is sweeter and smoother. HFCS coke has more bite, if that makes any sense.
