Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I hear there is good cycling in Boulder. I imagine that is the high rent district, though.

I'd probably be looking at Fort Collins, or the like.

I remember liking Cortez and Durango, but haven't been there since the '90s.

Durango I can see, but Cortez? In 2000 I had barely taken up residence in the campground at Mesa Verde N.P. with a woman I was seeing and some of her grad school classmates who were interning there when the park caught on fire. (I had ridden my there bike from Seattle.) We had to move down into town to the house where the other interns were staying. Wasn't enough room for everyone so we slept in a tent on the lawn. Other than the public pool, I don't remember anything fun or interesting about the town. Durango is a bit closer to the San Juan National Forest than Cortez and had much more of a vibe. Hear there is some great MTB-ing up there. On the flip side, it's easier to get to the Telluride area from Cortez. Just jump on CO 145 and climb for 75 miles.

I think I'm too old for fun and/or interesting stuff I just want easy access to the wilderness. Actually we do enjoy an occasional big city visit, and that would be a long drive from Cortez.

Rock Springs, WY to SLC is only 3 hours driving the speed limit.

Yes we have a local SPCA which is most likely place we will use.

Not quite as high rent as Boulder, but getting there. They aspire to be Boulder, and try to out-Boulder, Boulder.

Yes and no... I got my condo in Boulder for less than our house here in Austin. Houses in Boulder are psychotically expensive, but apartments and condos not so much. Rent isn't actually that much higher than rent was in Albany, and you can get cycling that's functionally equivalent to Boulder in FoCo or Longmont of really just about anywhere along the front range.

I'm surprised there's an IM Boulder for 2019; the contract was up after this year and I honestly thought FoCo was going to get it.

I may just do it next year. We'll see.

Good to know for future reference. But with my parents not getting any younger, looks like I am staying in the NE for the foreseeable future.

I waited until after the first storm went through, but then got hit by a second shower.

Whilst pedaling through the mess, I tried to come up with a list of things dumber than riding in the rain:

--winter
--inflammatory arthritis

not much else.

Idiotic.

We dodged the rain in the TT yesterday, but the ride was pretty sporty nonetheless.

I rode almost a perfect TT yesterday, other than the fact that I am too slow for this sport.
