Lance Pays Up

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's a surer way to get grimaces on this forum, starting a thread about Lance or about lancing saddle sores?

Humm, I thought they would have got more. Guess Lance should count his lucky gears for this one.

I can't believe in Murrica you can take someone to court over such a contentious non-contentious issue. USPS WOULD have made a boon on the USPS team. Why now after years after the case are they even still interested. It's basically just run of the mill trolling.

I hardly consider a 5 million dollar settlement when there was potentially 100 million dollars on the line as "paying up."

Eh?

I doubt Lance's activity seriously did any harm to the USPS. He won, they looked great, he was exposed and then nobody rounded back and said Hey, the USPS are dopers.

Oh well. This is like Capone going to jail for tax evasion.

The Moth Web Player

Listen and see what Lance said about a writer who questioned his "victories." Specifically, what he said in print about the young son this writer lost.

I find the following interesting; "Floyd Landis, a former teammate of Armstrong’s, was the original plaintiff in the case, acting as a whistle-blower with a chance to receive a share of any money recovered by the government."
"Landis, who also doped during his cycling career and was stripped of the 2006 Tour de France title, will receive $1.1 million of the government’s $5 million. In addition to the $5 million settlement, Armstrong will pay $1.65 million to cover Landis’s legal costs, according to lawyers for both Landis and Armstrong."

So, being a co-doper and fraud, does pay off.

15:30.......FWIW the back story is that this guy lost a young son. The kid was hit by a car while riding his bike home from school.

From what I understand, Landis made a deal. If he squealed, he got a lesser sentence. Whistle Blower = Stool Pigeon.

Landis....the sweetheart who threatened to "out" LeMond as a childhood victim of sexual assault unless he agreed to not testify about drug use by Landis?

Pretty incredible for sure.

Lance's reduction from 100 mil to 5 mil...can be much speculated and would be interested in thoughts from those closer to this than myself. But a couple of thoughts are:

- Everybody or probably the top 50 in the peloton doped on some level during the Lance years including Landis.

- Lance after paying out previous 15-20 mil in fines and legal fees, losing countless endorsements etc was worth nothing close to 100 mil, so would have declared bankruptcy.

A last note is, I am sure Lance believes in his heart of hearts that he deserved those 7 TdF wins because others in the peloton doped.

What cost Lance, I believe is him throwing everybody under the bus along the way. All he had to do was throw 1 or 2 TdF's toward his dutiful tribe that supported him but instead, he intimidated everybody he knew because he is that kind of sociopath. By contrast, when Lance came out of retirement with Contador on his team who he couldn't outride and never spoke a word to during that tour, that was his undoing. Had he not gone for yet another win...a testament to his greed and wanting to be the dominant team member in spite of Contador's undeniable talent, he would have retired a rich man...or at least much richer. Not sure a guy like Lance can really be happy unless he is standing on somebody's neck.

Floyd Landis apologizes to Greg LeMond for threatening call
Maybe an obtuse parallel to Lance. Landis throughout his career was out-Lanced. Landis like Lance believed he deserved to win that TdF because everybody was doping in the field and he was singled out. A covenant among thieves.

I think you're right. And, although I decry doping I actually have some understanding about their motivations. What I can't abide is their personal and vicious attacks on people like the Andreus and LeMonds who spoke truth. Lance in particular tried to destroy the lives of anyone who spoke out. And, Trek enabled him. These people are dishonest, evil and I'm judging them by the "content of their character."
