Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speaking of a$$hole cyclists...

I met one yesterday when I pulled into a gas station for a much needed bathroom break. I ride a brand new REI house brand Novara bike. It has great components and was the most bike I can afford. Well this dude on an Italian all CF bike looked it over up and down and said "Yeah, those Chinese bikes are bargain basement and you really do need a good bike if you want to club ride". I couldn't believe what I heard but I didn't have a comeback that wasn't laced with 4 letter words so I simply bid him adieu. OK, truth is, I am the only one on our regular Sunday club rides who own a non-designer brand bike. BFD. I can still keep up (just not uphills yet but I'll get there). I hope none of you out there in BF land are snobs.

Bikes: 2006 custom Walt Works roadie, 2003 Fuji Finest (road), 2002 Giant Iguana (mtb), 1986 BMW K75 (motor)

we're all snobs on some level.

I'd look down on someone riding a wal-mart bike, but that's less about the bike and more my hate for W-M.

Drop his a$$ on a hill sometime, and as you pedal away, say something like "how do you like my Chinese bike now??"

Or maybe something like "Gee, Italian carbon fiber...you must have a really small penis, huh?"

Meanwhile, in an alternate universe, I stopped for coffee and ran into some guys half my age who complimented me on my Sora-equipped $600 bike. One of them had a very nice Allez comp.

Snappy Comebacks:

I feel it is more important for the engine to be in top shape that it is for the paint job to have a fresh coat of wax on it.

I'd rather spend my money on my Porsche collection.

I'd rather ride a cheap bike than be a ******bag.

Feel free to add your own

Couldn't do that quite yet as the dude looked really fit and I'm carrying an extra 30lbs or so. But soon, very soon...Also, I just can't imagine anyone being that freaking arrogant so he must've just been trying to show off in front of my wife. Still no excuse.

Who cares...

When I got into this thing, I found it to be one of the snobbiest sports on the planet. So I tried mountain biking to see if there's a different crowd there, well lo and behold there's idiots over there too. Not only that, but they make fun of their own people... DHers don't like XCers blah blah blah, plus their usual roadies are "gay" comment. You get sick of it after awhile.

So now I just ride my bikes and couldn't care less about snobs and elitists. You can't please everybody.

Bikes: Orbea Orca Campified...

No need to reply to small minded people like that. You enjoy riding your bike is all that matters.

Basically all he said was a reflection of all his insecurities and should shows no reflection on you.

"Yeah, those Chinese bikes are bargain basement and you really do need a good bike if you want to club ride" translation, the only way I got accepted by my club was because I got a nice ride.

Note to self: do not, repeat do not eat and drink while reading BF.

That reponse almost ruined a nice keyboard and a pair of expensive monitors.

You could have stuck a knife in his sidewall and tell him that you would have bought a CF bike but they all seem to come with weak tires.
A sad commentary.

This gets my vote for best response. Elegant and to the point, without being arrogant about it

Bikes: 2 many

You did the right thing, he does not deserve the dignity of a civil reply. You did not lower yourself to his level. Well done.

I would have been strongly tempted to say............

"You have to be a decent guy to ride in my regular Sunday club, sorry."
