Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is it with the taking the piss out of the helmets? I pull up at school (being 16) and everyone i see who isn't a biker (I.E. Just using their bikes to and from school) always says something like "helmets are for babies". Hmmm, maybe that's just me.

Oh yeh, i also get "your bike is really small", but that's because i'm 16, don't work and can't afford a bigger frame, mines a 19". That one also applies to the "my bikes better than yours". Damn i need a job.

But i have to say no-one has picked mine up yet...

I usually get questions about price.

It's funny to talk cycling with people who don't ride. It's like we live in two different worlds. For example, I'd feel pretty cheap telling a cyclist that my bike only cost me $700, but to a non-cyclist spending $700 on a bike makes you (a) insane or (b) rich. As another example, one day I reluctantly told a non-cyclist that I had only ridden 20 miles that day because I only had about an hour to kill. I said it with shame, but to him it was like a marathon. "20 miles? Wow, that's like from here to ____."

This last winter I stopped at Starbucks after a 70 miler. I'm cold, shivering and ready for some go-juice. Still have shoe covers, arm warmers, full finger gloves, vest, tights, helmet...heck I'm wearing EVERYTHING. I'm a regular and another guy I see all the time (During the week when I'm dressed) see's me and walks past my bike leaning on the outside wall.
Looks at me and asks "You going for a bike ride?"

I said without missing a beat "Nope, I just like dressin' pretty...here's your sign.."

I get the lifting of the bike and weight comments, I also get guys asking where they can get legs like mine. =) I tell em to pick better parents next time 'round.

Hah. For awhile I was able to bring my bike in and keep it next to my desk. A coworker was in my office chatting with me and she goes over and feels the saddle. "Wow, your seat is really hard!"

I pointed to my butt and said, "Yeah, the more I ride, the harder it gets."

I park my bike in my classroom. I attach my shoes to the pedals to keep them out of the way. They think that's the funniest thing they ever saw. I guess cartoons aren't really that good these days.

My first graders are fascinated by my Camelbak. I'm sure that Santa is going to get requests for them this year.

This year I had a student in my class who requested to see the max speed on my computer every day that I rode.

I didn't mind showing him.
The way you wrote that is so amusing.

It might not be the first thing, but someone always asks "Doesn't your bike have a kick stand? That's odd."

when people tease you about helmets, you tell them that there are 85 million cyclist in US alone (I am guess you are in the States, Canadian stats won't do dick for you), 67000 of those will visit Emerg with head injuries.

My partner (also a roadie), was riding on the paved shoulder of a country road. Farmer Joe came shooting out of the driveway right onto the road. The driver didn't stop, my partner also couldn't stop in such a short time, he smash his helmeted head into the side of the truck, split the helmet and and fell onto the ground. One week in the hospital and two weeks in physio.

67,000 out of 85 MILLION? Why would you quote that stat? All it does is reinforce how uncommon head injuries are in cycling.

First questions tend to lean towards weight and price. And, like almost everyone else, I get chastized or gawked at. I mean, $800 could have been spent on so many other things right? I try to convince them, that for me it was more than worth it, and when I can afford it I will upgrade and they will really crap themselves. BTW no amount of logical reasoning will convince people that cycling is a good thiing, not just for recreation but as a means of transportation.

This type of conversation used to irritate the bejeebus out of me. Now, I take it in stride (I think). If they would rather sit on their arses, and waste money on gas that's their business.

No one rides road bikes around here really, so when they see one they think the rider is some kind of pro. I also get kids on the road that will ask me how fast my bikes goes
