Your Weekend Rides -- May 5/6

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Went on a 36 miler this morning. Was 15 miles into it on a rural highway in the country with no traffic. Next thing I know I was being loaded into an ambulance. A 93 year old lady nailed me, she said her side mirror hit me. Police said it was her fault. Scraped up, sore shoulder, leg and ankle, new $100 bibs shredded but nothing broken. Haven't seen my bike yet, it's at the police department. Hopefully it's not too bad. First incident in 31 years.

Our normal Saturday shop ride lead is out racing, so I took the 7-person group on a nice 50mile adventure across some roads they'd never ridden. Sun was playing peak-a-boo all morning, with light winds. Lots of fun and a spirited 19.8mph average. With riding there and back, I ended the day with 63 miles.

Rode a 2-parter. Began 6:45PM yesterday and rode non-stop until 4AM this morning, 145 miles with LOTS OF WIND. Had an urgent need for a pit stop so back to house and decided to stay in since the temperature was dropping. Shower, fresh kit, some food, prepped the Roubaix and waited until sun came up then headed to the LBS for Sat. ride. Way tired so I was dropped in no time flat and just continued solo for another 57 miles. 202 miles has a nice sound to it.

Went out with a friend for 31 mi., 1800 ft. elevation at a slow 12 mph. Partly because my bike had hub failure in both wheels. Very weird but true. A beautiful day and great company. Later in the evening we celebrated his birthday with another cyclist buddy.

I got back on the road bike for a couple rides during the week long holiday that the country just had. I was a little over three weeks past suffering a small fracture near my elbow in one of the bones on my left forearm.

The first ride I did was 11 miles, at a not terrible pace and a little climbing mixed in before it started to rain.

The second ride I got in was about 23 miles that I did with a friend, who was probably riding a road bike for the first time (one of mine and size too small for him probably). That ride was really slow at an 11 mph average to make sure my friend didn't blow himself up and proceed to hate cycling. It was a fun relaxing ride, without raising my heart rate. I didn't know some of those steady climbs could be so easy if one just does them sloooooooooooowly.

Saturday, short 18.1km training ride. Nothing noteworthy other than a rear wheel puncture which I didn't notice until later at home. Took a while to hunt down the cause, very tiny little piece of wire that wasn't visible from the outside, had to feel around with my fingers on the inside to find. Would be a really frustrating POS if this had happened in the middle of a longer ride.

Wasn't feeling so well that night, woke up next morning with some flu symptoms so I skipped riding on Sunday.

I rode 27.2 mi. The other day to pick up anpair of new cycling shoes. It was a great ride... Went through a couple of slight sprinkle's that felt cooling. The only bad thing was i had pedals yet for my new shoes. But it was still fun. I realized at 1 point that i needed to eat something so i did and felt better pretty quick.

Thurs: Rode CX bike down to the local dirt road. went across one puddle in a spot that gets flooded. Was easy to get through so I thought I was good.. I was not. Got to near the end of the normal way out and was stopped by hub deep water that went further than I could see. Turned around and went the alternate way out, again hub deep water but at least i could see the end. As I was hub deep 3 large carp swam past and around me. Was pretty nuts riding with fish. got home and had to empty my rims and bottom bracket of the water that i collected. not a ton but definitely not good to leave in there.

Sat: Group ride at one of the local shops. Advertised as mixed terrain. I asked the guy leading and he recommended file treads on the CX bike. Good choice.. about 15 of the 33mi was dirt/gravel with a few short trails. Good fun roads.. lots of hills. some of the downhills had some rough braking bumps that were tough on the hands. ride leader ended up with 2 pinch flats. It was rough but I was flat free at 40psi

Sun: mtn bike ride with a friend. threat of rain that finally caught up to us about halfway through. Wasn't too cold but made things slippery. Got home and took the GF out for crepes for breakfast.

10 miles on the single speed CX to watch the grandkids play baseball Saturday.

Sunday got out early for a fast club ride. These guys are strong & not sure if I have ever not got dropped the times I've done it.

Same this time, but good speed & power numbers- trying to get my speed up after a lot of distance riding. 67 miles, 4,100'.

My legs were kind of in shock when I got back.

Yesterday was gorgeous, but all I got was 27 miles over the course of two hours, learning to ride with aerobars. An old riding mate caught up to me on the way home and we chatted for a bit, but most of my current riding mates were out doing centuries and such.
Today rain was in the forecast, and I think it rained in the area before I got out, but even though I got underway quite late, I managed to get 44 miles in (gravel trails on the way out) and back to town before the bike shop closed (long story not worth recounting).

Funny thing about the TCX - I always find myself going further than planned. At first I thought I'd just go to Piermont, but when I got there, I figured, might as well take the trail up to Nyack since I'm here. Then after stopping for a coffee in Nyack, I figured, might as well do Nyack Beach while I'm here - I can just turn back at Rockland Lake. But once I was on those trails, I figured: what the heck, the Haverstraw trail is just another 3 1/2 miles.... Once I was done with that, I was half tempted to go up to the trail on the low side of Baby Bear, but forced myself up the helix and onto a route I rather dislike just to get back home, because I KNEW I wouldn't make it in time otherwise.

The unique thing about today's ride, though, was that although it was a solo ride, I had two very nice visits with friends along the way. About the time I was getting ready to head out from The Spoon (Nyack), another guy I know who was riding by himself shows up, and while he has his snack and coffee we have a nice chat, not just about bikes, but about work, too (we're in the same field). But we went our separate ways. Later, on the way home, a woman I used to ride with a lot passes me in her car (taking bike back home from shop), and pulls over to say hello. We have a surprisingly long chat just standing there on the side of the road, talking about how the dynamics of the group we've ridden with has changed lately, among other things. Both visits, as it were, were more than small talk, and more than just the usual bike banter, so in a way, even though it was a solo ride, it was one of the most sociable rides I've been on lately.

Only one ride this weekend. Dadgum neck pain flared up Friday night and kept me in bed most of Saturday. Felt better Sunday, rode 50 mile with a new-to-me shorter quill stem -- 90mm to replace the original 120mm. Huge improvement. Better balanced, much more comfortable on my neck, feels more efficient because my weight is over the pedals on climbs rather than stretched out. I should have done this months ago.

I'd heard some claims that a significantly shorter stem can feel twitchy, especially on fast descents, but it felt fine to me.

I was in a bit of a conundrum as I was scheduled to work this weekend. Where my house is, it currently 2 feet above the flood waters of the Saint John River south of Fredericton NB, Canada. Right now in my region is a spring freshet surpassing anything in the last 100 years thus cutting the road I live on off at the shallowest point 1.5 feet of water. The type of work I do is supplying work crews, machinery, generators for emergency operations, pumps ect with fuel so they can continue working. Needless to say with all the closed off roads and hectic schedule, the company I work for is extremely busy and not going to work was not an option. All this said, the water was too high for my vehicle to get through so I commuted with my bike 25 km each way. It was not an epic ride for me but it WAS one of the most interesting.

Due to work travel, this was my first full weekend home in a month. Enjoyed a 52 mile ride out into the country and back. Nice weather but windy coming home.

Giro Saros. Now I'm pretty sure she just plowed my bike because after i picked it up from the police station I learned the rear wheel is destroyed. Even the skewer snapped off. So I probably hit her grill or hood. Her insurance is taking care of me.

Only able to take one ride this past weekend. On Saturday did my Picnic and Davis Is. tour for 40 miles. Nice weather again. Sunday was on the road to vacation. I'm in the NC mountains. I wish I had my gravel bike because there are so many interesting roads that would be fun to try. However, it is a "family" vacation so I'm expected to be around. Anyways, I'm getting some great walks in the woods.

Thank goodness you're alive to post about the experience. Her license should be taken before she kills her next victim.
