Question regarding tubular tires / rims
Hi!
I was hoping that someone could help me with this!
I recently bought an old bike with Mavic Speciale Sport rims.
The specs (According to Velobase) are >
Rim Type Tubular
Rim Size 700c (622 mm)
Rim Outer Width (mm) 21mm
I need to get some new tires as the old ones are completely busted. I'd like to get a pair with white (not off-white) walls and found the Vittoria Open Corsa CX 23-622.
The specs are >
Size 700 x 23C (23-622)
Recommended tyre pressure: 8 - 10 bar
ISOgrip compound
Protection: PRB 2.0
Casing: Corespun 320 TPi
The question is; Will they fit?
Sorry for the newbie question!
Thanks!
Richard

Yes, those Vittoria Open Corsa CX should fit. But as noted above, white sidewalls are best for show bikes, not bikes that get ridden.

Good catch!!!
Tubulars will be rated as 700c, 27", or perhaps even 28" (all the same). They generally aren't rated as 622 BSD.
Make sure your tire says "tubular", or "sewup" and NOT "tubeless" or "open tubular".
Sizes from say 20mm width to 25mm width or so should be fine if they fit in the frame.

Oooh - fancy! But although he did admit his bike was old, he said he wanted new tires.
Meanwhile, here's a white 23mm sidewall tire: - which I think is what OP was looking for. Unfortunately, it seems the seller only has one, but needs to sell it to get through med school or something.....

Yes, I realise that it will cut my options down and that they won't stay white for long, but I'd still like to try because I like the look
Thanks, I'll try and find a slimmer tire!

Ok, thanks for the info!

Thanks! Those are nice but yes, I think I'd prefer new tires

I do not! But I was under the impression that I have to use tubular tires with that rim?
Are there any other options? Besides getting new rims of course.
Thanks!

Vittoria doesn't make these anymore, but there is still some stock out there if we haven't talked you out of it.

Richard, if you don't already know about tubulars, you probably don't want them. Tubular rims require tubular tires. People who like them are either racers, cyclocross riders, or vintage bike fans. In fact one of the things I like about my tubulars is the fact that they're too much hassle for most people to bother with.

I hear you but right now I'd rather not get a pair of new wheels. Plus, maybe I start liking tubulars, who knows
Would these ones fit the bill?
VITTORIA Corsa EVO CX Tubular 320TPI Black White
I'm not allowed to post links apparently..
Thanks!

Yup. Make double sure the ones you get don't say "open tubular"... which means "not tubular".
One of the best tires ever made.
You can try posting parts of a link for us to stick together if you want.

I don't think I've ever seen a white wall tubular. Lots of skin walls, including Vittoria.

Hi,
Thanks everyone!
I've reconsidered and will go with black tires. I realised it will actually look nicer so thanks!
I'm looking at getting either of these instead. I hope they will also work!
Vittoria Corsa CX Tubular 23-622
or
Vittoria Corsa EVO CX Tubular 320 TPI
I'm not really sure what the difference is?
Thanks again!
Richard

'622' denotes the bead seat diameter, and since tubulars don't have a bead,
it means that that is a "not tubular".
Simple, right?

Strange though that it actually says "Tubular" in the name but it's not a tubular tire.. Confusing.
So the Vittoria Corsa EVO CX Tubular 320 TPI is the one to go for in that case?

Yes, although those are expensive tires. You might consider starting with inexpensive tires
like Vittoria Rally while you see if you like the whole tubular thing.
Also, I recommend following the mounting instructions that come with the tires and not getting freaked out by
the various 'sky-is-falling' you tube videos out there.

No, take a look for how to get the tire on the rim, etc.,
but there are whole quasi-religious days long rituals for gluing tires promoted
that are excessive IMO.

This ad is clearly for a tubular tire and it's advertised as a 23-622:
https://www.starbike.com/en/vittoria...r-tire-23-622/
So the rule is, if it says "tubular" anywhere on the tire or the advertising or the sale listing, make damned sure whether it's a real tubular or a clincher before you buy.
And yeah, those Vittoria Corsas are really nice tires.

1. Mount tire and pump to 100 psi. Give it a day or 2 to stretch. For your first experience, maybe practice mounting a few times without glue. Pretend the base tape has glue and try to avoid it while mounting the tire.
2. Spread glue on base tape. I put scrap plastic bag over my finger tip to spread it. Others use a brush.
3. Set tire aside, glue will get tacky. Spread glue on rim.
4. Mount tire. Pump partway.
5. Check valve stem is straight. Work tire around to straighten it if needed
6. Spin wheel & center tire as needed.
7. Pump to 90 - 100
8. Ride 24 hours later.
