Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Real men don't use hangers. They use the dresser, bedroom door, floor and hamper to hang clothes.

Organization: Cycling garb and accessories are generally arranged by type, but other than that, stuff is just rolled up. At first I used a drawer in a piece of regular furniture, but when it got too full, I just picked up some cheap storage drawers. In one set, regular jerseys in top drawer, then shorts, then tights, then jackets and long sleeve jerseys. The other set is more jumbled. Bottom drawer is socks and warmers, above that is the drawer I USED to use for team kit, but now it just has odds and ends. The two drawers above have helmets, gloves, sunglasses, caps, and stuff I normally carry in back pocket (mini pumps, snack bars I grabbed but didn't eat, etc.).

Selection: Matching kit I save for events, group rides and weekends. Old stuff - I'll pull out for early morning weekday rides and other occasions I don't intend to stop anywhere before getting back home. Don't normally give much thought to which kit when, but with two events this weekend, I had to make a choice. Yesterday's was way up in the Adirondacks - hours away, not USAC, but promoted as a race. Tomorrow is a Gran Fondo less than an hour from home. So yesterday I wore race team kit (even though I don't have any such obligations) and tomorrow I'm wearing the kit from my local shop.

What about socks?

I'm in a quandry. Do you guys roll or fold your socks? What's the difference for life expectancy and, more importantly, for performance?

And what if you buy three pairs of the same brand at the same time? How do you keep the original pairs together if you wash them all at the same time? Is there a preferred marking strategy?

I like what you said here. I suspect the time taken to select the jersey (or daily ride clothing) doesn't differ that much among us. Folks with more options (clothing, weather, ride type, ride partners) have a more complex organization process. But that process allows them to make decisions efficiently and minimizes ride prep time. Good planning is not overthinking.

Yeah, sure, we all know that. But what about after they move out of their parents house and don't have mom to pick up after them anymore?

Just have your butler lay out the kit before each ride. He should make sure that it matches the bike that he picked out from your stable.

I put stuff in the dryer for a short time but take out when still damp.

Jerseys go on hanger in a doorway until dry, other things go on the classic spin bike drying rack.

This. I save my newest team kit for Tuesday races or weekend team rides, otherwise I just rotate through the other 3 sets and wash them all regularly.

This deserves a separate thread, IMO. Will surely generate some spirited debate.

We do a teleconference the night before a group ride to discuss jersey colour coordination.

It's really a mark of shame but the slowest rider is regulated to the back and has to wear orange for visibility.

I have 14 orange tops.

Bike clothes go in a drawer in a plastic dresser thing. In warmer months, cool weather clothing gets slid to the back - and vice versa.

Jersey selection is based on temperature, mood, and matchiness with bibs/shorts; bib/shorts selection is based on ride distance and chance of precipitation (I'm not skilled at stain removal). I tend to favor brighter colored jerseys for solo rides.

Jersey count is... getting high. Over 20, I think. Six bibs, they generally go in rotation.
Jerseys are decided at random, with a few exceptions. Long sleeve/lined obviously when it's colder, lightweight climber's jerseys situation-specific.
Weather is the single greatest factor in determining what jersey gets picked on any given day.
Socks should complement the jersey. If nothing goes well with the jersey, the socks are black. Sock count is... lots.
My helmets live on old hairdresser practice heads. Sort of like mannequin heads with terrible haircuts.
Shoes and all accessories live in two drawers in the "bike area."
Thanks. I like the practice heads idea for the helmets, but only if you meant the faceless expanded polystyrene type. Otherwise, it might creep me out. Ha! The "bike area" is also a good visual that makes me wonder what other BF members' bike areas look like.

Thanks for the detail and even sticking to the original organization of the first post! Interesting you changed your organization approach as your cycling apparel/equipment outgrew the previous method. And I'll bet it doesn't take you any time at all to get out the door either.

the one with the mustache,,,,,,,

anyway. jerseys and bibs that go together get matched on hangers their arm warmers get rolled up and put in a back pocket
any loose bibs live on a hanger together and my tights live on a hanger under my riding specific jackets and base-layers.
warmers, booties, socks and such just kinda go in a gear bags I got from events.

This is the 41. We all still live with our folks. How else could we afford to spend 200$ on a titanium skewer?

Don't we?

Guys?

I might put more thought into it than I should, but I enjoy it, so...
I think the first step is identifying the amount of climbing on our ride - if more hills, I'll use my Felt which has a compact crank. If it's a flatter ride I'll use my CAAD 10.
From there it's a matter of which jersey matches the chosen bike.
...but wait, there's more: If it's winter or spring, I'll likely need to select one of my "fat" jerseys, since I haven't yet lost my 10 lbs of winter weight.
In the middle of summer through fall I'm ok wearing one of my race fit jerseys...which will likely in some way match the color of chosen bike for that particular ride.
By "matching the color of the bike", I don't mean I necessarily wear a silver jersey with a silver bike - it just like the colors to go with each other - like a black or red jersey with the silver bike.

But I'm a poseur, so there's that.
No, I don't wear a team kit or a jersey with all sorts of advertising sponsor stuff. I'm not THAT much of a poseur.

Good former pro tour butlers are worth their weight.

Mine used to always makes sure my Rapha jerseys match my bike but unfortunately I had to let Mario Cippolini go.
