Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

He may have. LOTS of people did. The changing tents were just a free-for-all. And a lot of people competed in Speedos or similar, or one-pieces for the women. Body marking became a thing because tri geeks didn't have a place to pin a cycling number (now it's just tradition). If it weren't for sunburn I'd wear less racing than I already do.

Where is @DougRNS? If I knew when he was rolling through, I could go on a bridge over the highway and wave.

I wonder if he would wave back? Probably not--still mad about my '70s music comments.

No, it finally came back about 2 hours ago.

So-called "Business Class", but at the end of the day it is still a cable company with the crappy service that goes along with it. If they want to penalize you for non-payment, then fine - charge a hefty fee - don't jerk people around. The poor service got our people to start looking at different providers.

That's lousy. We had service interruptions a couple times with AT&T over payment. They did charge a noticeable re-connection fee, but service was back within a few hours.

It was DSL at the time. Don't see why that would be different, though.

Off topic, but I was impressed by some of these clocks/automatons people made in the 1700s.

In a way it's odd that they could build such intricate/complex gearing systems then, but wouldn't put the same on a bicycle until many decades later.

Especially with all the hills in clock capitals like Switzerland.

I can see why the Dutch didn't care, that place is mostly flat so fixed gear is perfect

at 8:25 p.m. you should have sensed a very strong rebuking. that's when I passed by the brown squirrel and waved my fist in anger.

there was no way I was going to give you my location. In your current maddened condition, twitter induced or rabies, you can't be trusted. As I went by I think I saw you on an overpass holding a 5 gallon container of what appeared to be Tennessee River water that you were fiendishly planning to throw through my front windshield.

Note: I did not stop or spend any money in your state. Just used your roadways for passage to my intermediate destination.

very interesting video. At the time of the automata, they had barely got the hang of attaching pedals and cranks to bicycles. Even derailleurs are reasonably modern. Reliable ones that didn't break all the time didn't appear until the late 1920s/early 1930s.

Yeah, the swan and that programmable writer are really something, even if they were crafted today, much less in the 1700s.

I'm led to think that for a number of years people simply didn't see the need for geared bicycles, because in the late 1800s it would have certainly been possible to build them.

When I was a broke first year law student I sautéd cabbage an onions in olive oil at least once a week for dinner, and that would be it. Also helps explain why I was only 175 lbs.

Fun fact for the day... I passed a couple dudes this morning during an effort. Per my usual level of creepiness, I checked Flybys and found out one of them is the guy that sold me the HED wheels I bought a few weeks ago. I wonder if he recognized the hubs?

My unsolicited opinion is that flyby-ing can hardly be considered creepy when the subject is advertising his identity publicly.
