Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saddle sores

We I guess I got a saddle sore yesterday in my ride. I have 2 questions. 1. Is there anything to prevent it again from happening. 2 How long should I hold off riding again to let it heal. I am wanting to get back out. But not at the cost of making it worse. Any help would be great. I do you chamie cream during my rides but I still got it. Thanks for any help.

Saddle sores are caused by bacteria, so try using something medicated.

I have been using Medicated Vaseline for years, but I don't think they make it any more.

Any suggestions for a replacement?

obviously use chamois cream before every ride (i have heard after every ride or wash as well) and wash your shorts after every ride. I wouldn't know how long to wait to get back on the bike.

I have used an antispectic wash, let it air dry and then put some neosporene on it.. You will usually see a decrease in size in 24 hours. Completely healed in 3-5 days..

You may want to try the assos chamois creme, it has an anti-bacterial agent in it and seems to work great for this reason..

-Always wear clean shorts.
-Take off your shorts immediately after your ride. Do not walk around in wet, funky shorts any longer than you have to.
-Do not wear underwear under your shorts. That rubbing action will create friction that leads to saddle sores
-Wash the area and use a zinc oxide creme on the saddle sore until it's gone

I was talking to the guy at my LBS about this. He said

After you take a shower (this may hurt a little) take rubbing alcohal and put it on like a cotton pad and rub the infected areas and the parts that touched the chamois. Another thing he said is that when you get done with a ride take off your shorts as fast as you can. and dont wear dirty shorts twice in a row, again the bacteria is growin. So the best thing for you to do is the rubbing alcohal to kill the bacteria around it. tell us how it goes (well not too explicitly )

I agree with using diaper rash cream. Cheap and does a better job then other products costing 2 -3 x more.

Wipe your undercarriage with rubbing alchohol after each ride. It prevents bacteria growth and toughens the skin over time. Note: Keep the stuff away from the helmuted guy... he does not need toughening.
