Wheel set on a budget

2015 Cannondale Synaspe Carbon 105, bought when I was new to road riding, was lent a set of FSA wheels 6 months later to use, way better than the Shimano RS wheels that came with the bike, had go give them back, put on the original set for todays ride and they scared the crap out of me at high downhill speeds. End of story. Want to buy a new wheel set in 1000 to 1500 k range opinions please. Kind of looking at the Bontragner Aeolus sets, in that price range. Opinions please.

Not sure how $1500 budget is 'on a budget'.
that should buy you wheels that quite literally fly.

there are a lot of Aeolus models. Which are you looking for?

and what is bad about the current wheels? Knowing thst helps others suggest.

Why would the original wheels scare you going downhill ?
Are they damaged or need truing ?
I have a range of wheels, and none scare me, but my race wheels are nicer.

If you're ready to spend that kind of money, there is absolutely no sense in buying an off-the-shelf wheelset, especially anything Bontrager.

You can get a handbuilt set of wheels with blingy hubs like Chris King or White Industries, CX-Ray spokes, and stay under 1500 bucks.

DrIsotope is correct. For 1500 bones that is custom money for sure. That is a huge budget foe wheel so. I have buds that 1500 would get them 2 bikes and still have money left over.

Uh, some of the Bontragers, like the Aeolus Pro 5, are quite good and a good value - don't let Trek-hate cloud your judgement.

Something like the Reynolds Assaults can regularly be had in the $1100-1200 range, too. I have disc versions and they're nice. I do wish that they were a little wider, but it's not a huge deal. Also, Performance has a version of the Assaults that can regularly be had for under $1k. I don't think that they have the latest rim shape, but again, no biggie .
