Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Trek Pilot 5.2 Road Test Update

600+ miles and going strong......Completed my first solo 50 miler of the season yesterday, and I am very pleased with the Pilot's performance. The ride was hilly throughout, but I was still able to average a respectable 18.0 mph......The Ultegra 10 performed flawlessly, and the Bontrager Race Lite wheels remain as true as the day I bought the bike. The Race X-Lite 25c tires also have handled glass and other road hazards with nary a nick......No lower back or neck pain to report. As I am a chronic sufferer, this is the most pleasant aspect of the ride. I bought the Pilot specifically for this, and have not been disappointed. I was even able to spend more time in the drops than on my old bike due to the more upright positioning......One final note. Flipping the stem and changing to 23c tires would probably have put me over 19 mph for the ride.

P.S: It would be interesting to hear from other Pilot owners out there. Although I obviously love my bike, I did test ride other bikes before I settled on this one. It just happened to be the best one for me when all was said and done. If something on this bike doesn't perform up to snuff, I'll be the first to complain.......In fact, Trek needs to spec a better saddle. The Bontrager Race Lux is too damn cushy for my taste. It also looks cheap and out of place on this otherwise sexy package (again....my opinion).

Side Note: How about that BEAUUUUTIIIFUUULLL Orbea Orca the winner of the Tour de Suisse was riding (with Dura Ace instead of Record, no less) this weekend!!!........My wife would have to worry if I had to choose between her and that bike! ;)

Can't comment on the Pilot, but I have just bought an Orbea Onix with 10 Ultegra (the Orca's little brother) and it is a BEAUUUUTIIIFUUULLL thing..... My wife has commented that I must be having an affair.
