Where do you sell your higher end used bikes?

It's been awhile since I've sold a used bike by anything other than word of mouth. I feel as if I'm probably behind the times. I suspect Craigslist isn't as helpful as it used to be.

What is the best website / method for selling higher end used bikes these days? If it matters, it's a triathlon / time trial bike. Are Craigslist and eBay still the places to go?

You sell your bikes?!?!

Can try a local ad type, you can try craigslist but I don't care to use that. If its possible talk to your LBS too, they might be able to help you out. My bike shop where I put the owners kid through collage I think has helped me consign a bike in the past.

If you have a coop type place they have a bulletin board usually......its tough though sometimes.

Pinkbike is free, and mostly free of scammers.

Now there is facebook marketplace, not sure if its any better than CL. There is a sub forum here but it says it requires a paid membership. A couple other dedicated sites seem to want money too bike trader, bike exchange. If its a high end bike it might be worth the $10 to list an ad. Might want to look at them and see how active they seem to be in your area.

I part them out, clean up the components and put them on eBay. It's more work, but in general, the whole is worth less than the sum of the parts. One bike I had just finished disassembling, when my neighbor mentioned that he was looking for a decent used MTB, so I rebuilt it, put in new brake cables and sold it at what was probably a significant loss, but he's a good guy, and I'm happy to see the bike still getting used.

It's been eBay for me over the last 7 years, but I've also sold a few on CL at the higher BIN price I had on eBay. I would include Slowtwitch.com for a tri/TT bike. TriNewbies might be another site to post an ad, but I have no experience with that site. I've heard FB is good for bikes in general, but again, no experience there. Good luck.

All I know is the facebook groups and forums.

Pretty sure Craigslist is still your best bet.
Can be a pain in the arse sometimes but minimal to no risk as the seller unless you are a complete fool.

Is convenience or better return a priority? I've always gone with convenience. Not saying my time is worth so much money, but convenience is pretty valuable to me. :) Had the local shop handle eBay sales of a bike and some wheels for a fee, and it was nice not having to worry about taking good pictures, composing the ad, packing, shipping, and all that. Also recently sold a bike to a friend who came to visit. Super convenient, but the return was terrible. ;)

Might want to try your local bicycle shop. Some buy/sell used bikes of all types

We have a Road Bike Marketplace right at the top of the Road Bike forum page. You have to be a paid forum member but a 30 day trial membership is only $3.

Most areas have bicycle clubs and other FB groups. I sold one on my club's FB site.

I've gotten the most by selling them on eBay, but I've sold a lot there with good feedback, so people bid higher than they might otherwise. Shipping is the only difficult part, as UPS the USPS tend to charge a lot. Through eBay you can get a shipping discount, but I had my LBS do it, they had a shipping account, and I could use their old bike boxes.

Thanks for all the replies! I don't seem to be quite as far behind the times as I thought I might be. I think a big part of my challenge is that it's a TT/Triathlon bike. That market is a lot smaller than the one for road bikes.

Anyone know much about

Used Bicycles For Sale - free classified

Seems to be lots of bikes there, but the inventory doesn't appear to turn much..or at all, which I find strange as a search with 145 hits should turnover to some extent. The site spelling and description grammar is also very poor..which is an earmark of something less than legit. (example, on home page top right "Resent Bicylces For Sale"..really?

Slowtwitch and Paceline are really good places. For some locales, there are Facebook groups also work well. Criagslist is kind of useless. When all else fails, eBay.

I still thing Craiglist / Facebook is the best. It's possible the reason that its not selling is the price is too high. Bike Blue Book can help see if your price is within the range.

Thanks for the advice. It's hard to establish a value. My selling price looks pretty consistent with eBay sales -- but those are extremely few and far between. There's not a bike like it on Bike Blue Book, unfortunately.

It's only been listed a couple days. I'm not in a rush. I will give it time.

alpine 318is 08-29-18 02:30 PM

My theory on Craiglist is that if it sells in under a week, you had it priced too low. Doesn't sell in a 3 weeks, its priced too high. I know the high end market pretty well from 30+ bike sales in the last 2 years. If you want you could PM me the eBay link and I'll take a look.

Noctilux.95 08-29-18 05:22 PM

Part it out and sell it on eBay! Frameset, groupset, cockpit, wheels, seatpost, and saddle.

MyTi 08-29-18 05:36 PM

I vote craigslist. No fees and straight cash. Problem is the lowballers and the flakes. Can take a long time to sell on CL versus ebay from my experience
