Just because it’s kind of a lazy day and I finally had a moment to wash the bike. After a few thousand miles I continue to enjoy the ride qualities and fit. I think I’ve finally settled on a saddle (Specialized Toupe Pro). Sold the generic carbon wheels and am on the lookout for a new set of tubeless compatible light carbon wheels with black hubs :)
I also realized that I hadn’t wrapped bars with leather in upwards of 20 years and it looked like poop. These are the before pics, did a much better job after.

Show off off your bike after a bath... why not?

woodcraft 08-27-18 08:51 PM

Would have to wash it first.

I might be better off with a "show off your dirty bike" thread.

That's a very clean & sharp looking bike!

Weakbikr 08-28-18 05:54 AM

Very nice! I need to wash mine now....

robbyville 08-28-18 06:30 AM

Yeah I only wash it about once a month or so. Worse this time around since we got a rate smattering of rain so the desert dust was caked on in spots.

Very nice, I was not aware of this brand https://www.speedvagen.com/

How did you get that large chip on the seatstay?

must be a shadow, the seat stay is chip free! I do have a small scratch on the top tube from the first week with the bike and paint was still curing. I was warned to stay off gravel for the first 60 days or so since the bike comes fresh from paint.

Good sporty fit. You know what you are doing in setting up your shifter and bar.
Can you tell us about the frame?

I was just messing with you. I went with a Cerakote finish for my custom ti ride. No curing period.

Although my personal preference would be Campy EPS, this is as perfect as you can get when it comes to a true, custom build. Can't go wrong with that Speedvagen.

Capo72 08-28-18 11:03 AM

Thanks, I just spent an hour on the Speedvagen website dreaming up a build.

Thanks Campag, good to hear from you! Although I don't "need" custom, the frame is made by Speedvagen out of their Portland Oregon shop. Fittings are done by the owner Sacha White, he has a team of roughly 9 people including mechanics who weld/bond, and build just under 200 bikes each year. I loved my Domane but wanted a more aggressive/Sporty fit and in an ideal world wanted to minimize the amount of top tube slope (but fit would take priority over this). In the end the bike has an Enve carbon fork, Pro Stealth carbon bar/stem combo, Enve made carbon seat tube and seat post. The rest of the frame is a steel blend. The bike rides really nicely and part of the fit process includes where to place your brifters on the bars (if buying frameset only which is no longer an offered option).

Very cool, had not heard of that before! This paint is definitely "soft", after my last clean up job I was placing the rear wheel in the dropouts and had a misfortune with the chain that really freaked me out!

Thanks Primov and great to hear from you after so much time! I admit that I was on the verge of going EPS. Originally I was planning to port the components from my prior bike to this hence having it built with DI2 in mind. Then, I got a great deal on the new 9150 stuff and started to think of Super Record EPS, but didn't know enough about the set up and such plus not all parts were available when I needed. Couple that with a guy who wanted to buy my old bike as a complete... Maybe when I rebuild in a few years!

LOL, I know the feeling! I lusted for a SV for over 4 years before finally being given the chance to pull the trigger. They also do a great job on the marketing front. I'm a one bike guy, this is the only road bike in my quiver and it's freaking phenomenal. Presumably the last bike I'll have as well. I went all out and got every upgrade I wanted or would think "what if" I didn't. I was fortunate in that I received one of the last frame builds they did. Now they've limited themselves to 111 bikes per year (plus OG1's and special releases). To be fair though, they actually lowered the prices on the gruppos so that complete bicycles would be more reasonably priced. Honestly, mine fully built up by me came in at just a bit over what a comparably equipped Pinarello F10 would be and that included my flight to Portland, fitting, hotel, etc. Just a thought!

10/10 hot bike. Also hot location. Visited PS back in May, rented a bike from Triabike and rode up the Tramway access road a few times. Surprisingly nice to ride in the desert.

Yes sir, almost 4 years off the bike. I built up a Storck last summer just to get myself back on the road; tried selling it earlier this year thinking cycling wasn't in me anymore. After suffering another injury sparring in the gym, my wife and kids said no more. So here I am, back on the Storck and it feels great!

IMO, your Speedvagen is definitely one of the best builds I've seen.

thank you so much for the kind words, I’ve modeled it after some of your equally beautiful yet functional builds! The sparring challenges remind me of that episode of Friends when John Favreau won’t give up cage fighting!

FYI I could never get some of those awesome paint jobs and builds of yours out of my mind!

Robbyville: I hate you for introducing me to Speedvagen. OMG! I just spent an hour looking through their website. Now life will not be complete until I take ownership of one of these beautiful machines.

But seriously, enjoy the ride!

Thanks so much for the kind words. Yeah we have awesome infrastructure for cycling and visiting cyclists with multiple shops that have top end and mid level rental road bikes. The main local club (Desert Cycle Club), along with the Salton Sea Triathlon Club are incredibly welcoming and have tons of ride options with guests always welcome. During peak season on a Saturday ride it's not abnormal to have up to 150 riders and visitors show up (of course groups get broken down)!

Thanks so much, and as mentioned before I know the feeling! I was first introduced to Speedvagen from a cycling friend who thought that I would like their marketing collateral. True enough I bided my time, scrimping and saving so that I could eventually have it made for me. I'm incredibly happy with how it turned out and the service the company has provided. Now you too can have a new goal in life lol!
