Chainstay protector
 

Beefy CF stays are getting chain slapped fairly regularly in small cassette cogs. What do you use to protect your chainstays that won't interfere with the exterior cable running under the chainstay? The typical fabric velcro chainstay wrap would wrap the cable as well and may interfere with shifting.

I use the type that adheres just on the top of the chainstay. They are either vinyl, CF, stainless steel, etc.

The simplest are the stick-on protectors. They're under 10 bucks. Though anything works. You could put a strip of tape on there. My road bike has two layers of non-permanent signage vinyl.

Use an old tube, a clutch derailer, or chain tensioner

3m protection tape, 1-2 layers is it, even on the carbon cross bike is enough

Strip of inner tube glued to top of chainstay.

Protects, also quiets.

REI carries Lizard Skins protectors in clear and (faux) carbon for 10 bucks or so; this is probably one of the more readily available local options for a lot of people .

Or get the new Ultegra clutch derailleur.

I understand it would work, but you'd ruin the aesthetics of the frame with a bit of latex/rubber glued onto the chain stay. Also when you pull it off won't it ruin the finish?

I ordered the $1.40 set of clear frame protector stickers from ebay/china. Comes with two chainstay protectors and a few other smaller stickers I can use to protect the head tube against cable rub.

We shall see if I tossed my money away or if these work out ok.

Not that different from bar tape, & I'm guessing that you deal with that looks & finish-wise....

hit up ebay.....there a million sellers there selling protectors. I got one that looks like carbon fiber and just sticks on like a decal. it was like $8.....

Sounds like the one I bought. Stuck it on after cleaning with alcohol wipe and it stuck for about 2 seconds and then uncurved itself from around the chainstay. Still need a working option...

The correct answer is mastic tape. The clear vinyl stuff is too thin for areas that really take a constant beating.

i bought this one, you can make 4 protectors out of this piece, it is transparent and amazingly strong. vinyl is more or less useless.
