Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's gusting wind that annoys me the most. Trying to maintain power when wind keeps changing speed is a pain.

wind is another force, like gravity, that we cyclists must learn to respect, it's always there, even as just plain air resistance!

If you don't like the wind, stay away from Corpus Christi, Texas and the Gulf Coast. Not only will you be fighting the wind, the humidity will be close to 100%. Hills are hard to find. But if you get lucky and find one better hope you're going downwind if you want to coast. Cause if you try to coast downhill against the wind, the wind will blow you uphill backwards.

23mph wind, 35mph gusts. Not terrifyingly windy, but utterly humbling!

Don't like it but can tolerate it, except...
25 mph winds with gusts up to 40 mph here today with snow! needless to say I didn't ride any today,

My ride Tuesday morning started at 8:30am and concluded at 2:30pm. I had what could be referred to as a "tailwind" for less than 30 minutes.

Southern California wind is friend to no one.

Possibly a great day for a one-way ride going south tho...

Love to hate wind.

Always have a reason my speed avg is less than I
think it should be.

Was all pumped when I saw my cadence & speed
High in the 1st 1/2 (tail wind side), motivated me to
push back on the last 1/2 (head wind) to try to keep them there.(gained .2 mph from normal on that loop)

Makes me think “aero” & not how much I hate wind .
Wind tunnel training, can’t get that in a gym.

Pedal into it for two and a half hours and it becomes far less an episode of "this sure is a great workout," and more of a "maybe I'll get hit by a truck and this will all be over."

It would have been far less miserable if it had been directly head-on. But it was kinda oblique to me, so it was a constant fight to keep the bike going in a straight line-- while putting out 22-23mph power to scrape out 16mph. My shoulders are sore 5 days later.

Not sure about this but... knowing how drafting makes such a big difference and assuming it takes double the effort to pedal 18mph when you add a 10 mph headwind, I can only guess but it makes sense that it also probably takes twice the effort to maintain 10 mph if you add a 18 mph headwind... which would probably be about what you'd expect maintaining 10 mph if you add a ~ 4-5 percent grade.

I've found if you remove your computer and don't concern yourself with average speed then the wind doesn't hurt as much. Just ride at the pace that feels good and don't worry about how fast you're going. I purposely have no computer on my single speed and headwinds don't bother me a bit.

I don't mind and sometime enjoy headwinds on training aka recreational rides.

It is during the commute when they are so annoying for three reasons:
-Just want to get home (or not late to work)
-Fitting in with traffic, merging for example, has a different feel & timings when traveling at significantly different than normal speeds.
-It is cliche, but there are times of year where there is always a headwind into work and always one going home. That has been pretty much all of Sept and Oct so far and based on next week's forecast is expected to continue.
