New Helmet time

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

MIPS is a good thing in the lab. Does it translate to real world experience? Not sure anyone really knows. I found a killer deal on a Giro D'Italia themed Kask Protone and bought it yesterday.

They just need to set up a study with 100 riders with MIPS and non-MIPS helmets, and have them all wreck the same way, and see which group gets more brain injuries...

That's been done. The problem is that the losers in that experiment aren't here typing their feedback, so we're not really sure how it turned out.

It's been a month so I assume you bought but in case anyone else is looking

Poc Octal is light and good venting

Synthe is good, now surpassed by the Giro Aether.
The Aether is really clever. The MIPS is in the split helmet design, not affecting the fit to your head.

Kask Valegro - light and good venting
Kask Protone - not good venting. This is Kask's aero road, and they sacrificed venting. Looks nice though.

I'm deciding between a Synthe and the Valegro as well....BUT...after reading more reviews, the less popular Aeon seems to vent just as well as the Synthe and weighs a little less.

Anyone chime in on this?

As I mentioned earlier, my wife has an Aeon and it's the lightest helmet I've ever picked up, by a significant margin. If you want light, I don't know if you can do lighter-- I think the Specialized Prevail is supposedly lighter, but it's also hideous.

I'd urge you to consider Kask Mojito. The comfort of the chin strap alone makes it worth it

Can't compare the Synthe with Aeon, but fwiw I bought a Synthe (MIPS) last spring. Best helmet (combination of weight; venting; fit; looks) I've ever had. Don't regret the money spent. I've always used Giro helmets -- they simply work well for me re. fit -- but I really do like the 'low profile'/subdued look of the Synthe as compared to something like the Aeon. Might have something to do with aero; I wouldn't know and I'm too slow for that to matter!

The Aeon is a good helmet. It was the successor to the very popular Atmos 2
If you like it, there's nothing wrong with it. It was Giro's high end helmet for a while back in the day
The styling is old fashioned so it may not appeal to some. Sometimes it's fun to wear the old style.

Aeon and Valegro are similar in that they have large vents with minimal structure and thin padding.

If you're looking for a slightly more budget option,
The Atmos 2 is probably less than half the Aeon cost for basically the same helmet. (personally, if getting the Aeon, I would save the cash and find a Atmos 2)
The Cinder Mips is $50 less than the Aeon, for a budget Synthe look-alike
The Aeon, it's a solid choice. Great venting.

Thanks everyone.

Will go and try to find an Aeon to fit locally. I already had a Mojito before, and while the fit/strap was great, it didn't vent as well as I thought it would. Really like the quality of Kask helmets, which is why I was considering the Valegro.

Surprisingly I have not Purchased one yet. I travel a lot for work and have stopped in many shops. Amazingly, all I a man seeing is Giro, Bell, Specialized and Bontrager. None of those are on my wish list. I may order a Kask and hope it fits well.

My advice is to try to increase your options for trying them on before you buy.

Either that, or plan to tie up a lot of credit card money in ordering a variety of helmets in a variety of sizes from a vendor with a generous return policy.

fwiw, the two different models of Bell helmet that I've been wearing since circa 2012 are listed as "Medium: 55-59cm". So I figured I was pretty safe ordering a new Lazer helmet that's listed as "Medium: 55-59cm".

Nope. Didn't fit.

I ended up with the Aeon. It's made for more oval heads (like mine) and the pressure is even across the circumference of the head. Just feels comfortable all the way around. Also one of the lightest for a size Large.

Some of the others I tried:

Valegro (M) - sat high and for rounder heads.
Catlike Mixino (L) - fits great, sits high for me. I didn't like the position of the straps at the front either.
Lazer Z1 (M) - I think this would have worked if the store had a Large, but I only got to try on the Medium.
PC Octal (M & L) - For rounder heads also. The straps were too short on the M. The Large fit great, but it's Spaceballs territory already.

My current Large Mojito fits really well, but ventilation is subpar.

I think I'll be happy with the Aeon.

A note about Giro...

I have a Giro Savant MIPS that I've worn for several years. This past summer, the tension dial-adjuster broke. I called their customer service and they sent me a new helmet, no questions asked. When it arrived, they had mistakenly sent me a Foray MIPS. Called them again, they apologized and sent me the correct model which arrived about a week later. When I asked about returning the Foray, the rep said to just keep it.

So now I've got two brand new helmets on a no-hassle warranty claim from a helmet purchased ~3 years ago. I'd say that's pretty fantastic customer support.

If people wouldn't look at themselves in the mirror while wearing a bike helmet, they could pick one a lot sooner and be out on the road again. If one is truly concerned about what other cyclists think, they need only dial it up to 400 watts and drope the hamer on them.

Any helmet I put on only improves my looks so as long as it fits, I'm good to go. Currently wearing a red Catlike Whisper. Looks like a cheese grater.
