Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tiagra vs. ultegra

I just purchased some new wheels (Ritchey Pro OCR) and was wondering if I should put my Tiagra 12-25 cassette on them or buy an Ultegra cassette. I don't race, but I do ride hard and will be doing a few Triathlons in the future. THe tiagra cassette only has 50 miles on it and my bike is a specialized Allez sport. Is there a big difference ? Any thoughts ?

If they are both a 12-25, you won't be able to tell the difference. Personally, I prefer the way the old-time freewheels were set up, often something like 14-28. That creates gear combinations where "real" people can spin at an easy 90 RPM's. A 52 x 12 combination is helpful to the average rider IF he is riding down the side of a mountain.

I saw a guy yesterday riding at about fifteen miles per hour in a 52 x 12 combination. His legs were pumping ever so slowly, his face was getting redder and redder. I suspect that he will soon hang his bike up in the garage and say "Riding bikes is too hard". Bikes should come with a warning "Many of these gear combinations are provided for marketing reasons ONLY...they are not for use by normal humans".

The difference is mainly weight. Ultegra being lighter.
