Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Only managed to get a couple of pics.

Nice.

Another warm, windy day. If I wasn't so damn tired, I'd be chafing at the bit to get out and ride. Hopefully later in the day. I've read that we don't really decline due to age, but rather that we age due to decline. I'm trying to believe it.

Just experienced the most obnoxious solicitation door knock ever - Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. It was damn near the punch-in-the-face-first-ask-questions-later kind of obnoxious. I don't know how anyone could expect a positive reaction to that kind of opening.

This morning I nearly got creamed by a cyclist who ran a light while I was running errands on foot. When I said something he had the nerve to give me the typical "FU" response that many people give when they are in the wrong. I think it's the second time the guy has not yielded to me. His bike is fairly recognizable and he was heading in the direction of my 'hood. I am going to keep an eye out for him.

Kind of exciting around here at the moment, weather wise. We're having one of our semi-rare winter severe thunderstorms. We got hail, tornados, 60 mph winds. So far, the tornados stayed 15-20 miles away from us and our warning has expired but we're currently getting some decent size hail. HeeHaw, ride 'er out!

What you describe is definitely true. For smaller riders, the longer crank lengths mean your knee comes up too high at the top of your pedal stroke when compared with a bigger rider. This means it’s a little harder to get your foot over the top of the pedal stroke, which slows your cadence a bit. It’s not dangerous or bad for your knees but it decreases the cadence range over which you naturally pedal. Having a wider range of available cadence is a good thing, it gives you more arrows in your quiver essentially.

The other interesting thing is if you simultaneously measure power output during the pedal stroke, people who are riding with cranks that are too long for them have a little power dead spot at the top of the pedal stroke. It’s not a huge decrease in power output, but measurable and it can add up over the duration of a ride.

I ride with 165mm cranks and I’m 5’ 5”. I can ride with 170s but they don’t feel quite right to me, not as enjoyable to pedal them.
First of all, thanks for sharing your perspective and it was good to finally meet you last week. Second, you must have been having a tall day because I was recently measured at 5'2" and I was wearing cowboy boots Tuesday and you still seemed more than 3" taller than me. Thirdly, I was reminded by LoP that we can't simply buy a set of 165mm cranks and pop them on to see what happens. We have to have special cranks because of the way the tandem is set up. I think I'm going to pop into the tandem forum and see if anyone has discussed running something other than the standard 170mm.

Busy weekend. Good club ride yesterday. Came home and did yardwork for a few hours until lawn tractor motor died. Will try to see if I can fix it today. Heidi has concert last night. I did an early wet trail ride as mrs datlas wants me to accompany her to Wegmans later this morning. We have another concert this afternoon and will make homemade latkes this evening.

Greetings from the wet trail!
