Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

@datlas You're a cycling addict for real . . . cold rain is an automatic show-stopper, like a GFCI.

Hey I have a weather question. I like to think I am pretty good at reading weather sites and radar etc., but if you look at current radar and forecast info they all say cloudy, no rain, and only 10% chance of rain. Sounds like good riding weather. But no!!!

The reality is there is a constant not-so-light mist that makes you nearly as wet as light rain. Short of going outside and checking, is there a way to discern dry "cloudy" weather from "wet misty" weather from a weather site?

Good news is that I got the lawn tractor working. Cleaned out air filter, spark plug, and charged up battery.

Latest mechanical problem is trouble removing a cassette. My grip strength must be weak. See pic below. I do have a breaker bar but ID too small to slip over crescent wrench. Sad!

Any tips? Should I post in mechanics forum??

I would say no. Trained meteorologists are capable of teasing out those distinctions because they can filter in the other weather variables that radar can't show. Even then, weatherpersons are notoriously often wrong.

Do you have a bench vise? Or a socket that's big enough? The cheater would likely fit over a ratchet handle. Also, it helps to put the skewer in, without the springs, to prevent the wrench slipping off the nut. Screw it down further than you would think. All you need is movement for the initial offering. For the bench vise method, once you have your skewer in place, clamp the nut into the vise, and then pretend you're a schoolbus driver. Turn the wheel left to right.

In other news, it dawned on me that the dealership will have the car all day tomorrow, so I may as well throw a bike in the back and make a useful day of it. This will be the first time I've carried a bike in the new car, which was purchased for the express purpose of carrying bikes.

And in still other news, I looked up wintertime knees and was informed that keeping a good attitude can help. Where have I heard that before? I will give it a try, but can't say I'm convinced.

The question then is this. Should I put the new tires on the bike for tomorrow's adventures or stick with the tried and true?

I didn't see 'Fargo', but from what I understand, that one was probably bigger. Did you get the cassette off?

I guess you and I are the only ones who don't watch football all day. As for myself, I'm about to go for a ride.

WXRAD does not pick up mist or drizzle. Droplets must be of some minimum size to return an echo. Sensitivity goes down with distance from the radar site. That stuff also tends to occur in a thin air layer near the ground, and gets lost in the ground clutter. When in doubt, read what the humans are saying.

I am incredulously watching the Packers' season be ruined by the Cardinals. Why isn't Green Bay better this year? Why is Arizona beating them? Is it the lack of snow today?

I had a meteorology class in college and on the first night, the instructor said that if anyone tries to tell you what the weather is going to be tomorrow, ignore them. And if you try it after this semester, you should be ashamed.

Of course, this was around 1970 so meteorology forecasts are slightly better today...

I can kind of understand - even though I don't condone- cyclists having an attitude towards motorists i.e. You're surrounded by metal and your vehicle weighs thousands of pounds so I have the right of way and you'd better be paying attention. But I don't get the lack of brotherhood when it comes to pedestrians And, while we're at it, I would like more acknowledgement from cyclists when I, as a pedestrian, yield to bikes even though I'm not required to. If I'm hiking and I see or hear a bike or bikes coming, especially in a more technical section of the trail, I move to one side and sometimes even into the dirt beside the trail so the riders don't have to lose momentum or navigate around me. I'm not expecting fireworks to be set off but a nod, an index finger raised, a "thanks" would make me feel my effort is appreciated and the rider has noted I'm not strolling along obliviously with earbuds in as so many hikers do. Is that too much to ask?

I don't watch professional football, so I rode today. >70F which was nice. My fitness is terrible. Someday my life won't be full of stuff I don't want to do. Maybe. When it happens, I won't be able to do what I want. Prolly.
