Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Serious question here. As the country prepares the funeral of Bush 41, can anyone explain the National Cathedral to me? Isn’t that an oxymoron?

I guess it's our Westminster, chartered in 1907 at the height of Rooseveltian anglophilia and dreams of empire, but to be truly representative today, shouldn't it be a non-denominational megachurch with acres of parking?

How does the First Amendment allow Congress to charter a house of worship of any religion/denomination?

I dunno, but it's a beautiful building and there's a Darth Vader grotesque, so bonus points for that.

The cable on the garage door lock snapped this morning. 15F. Probably won't fix it today.

One of the very few pleasant things about riding in the cold is that one looks forward to the hills.

You're sapping my shaky resolve to leave this poorly heated office at a shut-down federal agency and beat myself for a few chilly miles.

One of our Texas folks rode up to Jamestown, which he described as a nice little climb. Then, past the store that folks call the top, there is another couple miles called Super James. Nasty climb, with near 20% stuff at times. My memorable time was doing that when I left the house at around 20 degrees. By the time we hit the top there, it was probably 15 degrees, because it was later in the day. Like you, I enjoyed the climb, as much as I can enjoy any climb, but the descent about ruined me. Nice road, it was safe, but there was no glove or balaclava that could fight that.nasty stuff.

Brutal.

I have started shivering on a few descents on my crit-oid road bike, got that low-trail fork oscillating, and nearly lost it. I'm a shaky descender when warm.

Cold, I am familiar with, but what's this "climbing" and "descending" that you speak of?

I had a memorable 2 mile descent at the end of a gravel ride last Spring. I was a popsicle, by the time I got to the bottom.

I've wondered about this for years, as I ride by rural churches with American flags flying in the yard.
