Cost of Chamois Cream

Can anyone explain why in the actual hell this stuff costs as much as it does? Most of the Aveda stuff I buy my wife doesn't cost as much as the average tub or tube of chamois cream. I checked the ingredients. It's not like there's any Patagonian 3 Tusked Walrus lard in it. No liquefied rare earth metals. A little doesn't go a long way either. I am thinking about giving up and just going with Mazola.

  1. Because OCD cyclists will pay it.
  2. Because it's a small (tiny) market.
  3. Mazola as chamois cream is an image that I can't unsee.

Let us know how the Mazola goes. I think Pixies make chamois cream in dark Bavarian forests. With Pixie dust, that's what is so expensive. I have a favorite that can be found online for a reasonable? price occasionally. But I agree it's pricey.

..but I'm not on the gulf coast.

In the decades past, bike shorts, Wool, had leather liner pads, sheepskin,
not from so many alpine goats,
washing and drying, shorts, that dry leather needed re moisturizing..
to be soft, again.
Now the liner-patch, is a synthetic.. sewn in bike shorts..
it is not really needing that treatment..

I mostly just use skin hygiene *, clean bike shorts, daily, on long tours,

and an occasional dab of neosporin on spot inflammations.

*surgeon's scrub concentrated anti bacterial soap,
it's natural surface bacteria getting into the skin pores and dying,
.. that's the pus source, so minimize the bacteria count..

But, this thread is obviously about buying something,
just arguing amongst yourselves, over which commodity to buy.

Carry On.. :innocent:

I suppose it's pricey on $/ounce basis. Used to be lots of proponents of Bag Balm, though I can't say I've tried it. It seemed udderly pointless since I seem to keep getting a tube of chamois butt'r every bday and holiday as a standard gift.

indyfabz 10-07-18 05:48 PM

What I want to know is, if you need some lubricant, why you would care and not just buy it? It's not like it's THAT expensive and you are using a tub every week. Or maybe you are? If so, I would seek professional medical advice in Pills & Ills over in the 50+ forum.

Are you calling me cheap and old?

CAT7RDR 10-07-18 06:16 PM

Cocoa Butter works just fine at a fraction of the price.

Maybe frugal and mature. :)

SCPaul 10-07-18 06:52 PM

Queen Helene's is what I use, if I need it.

Or the lanolin/petroleum jelly version of diaper rash cream. The 40% zinc version if a really long day. Both under $3 for a 4 oz tube.

Does that wash out of the chamois easily?

It doesn't? I purchased an 8oz tube YEARS ago (15K miles+), and I still have it. I rarely use it, just a little on hot days when doing a lot of hours. No need for under two hour rides.

It could very well be that I am over applying it. I have never had anyone show me how to use it.

rgconner 10-07-18 07:43 PM

My ass is worth it.

But not the Rapha stuff, my ass is not that pretentious...

Bomb Komodo 10-07-18 07:43 PM

My ASOS jar has lasted a year. Its totally worth it for me.

MAK 10-07-18 09:05 PM

If you do use Mazola, be sure to bring some dog repellant. Just a thought.

MagicHour 10-07-18 10:30 PM

Nashbar Pro Style chamois cream - ~$12.99 for a fairly large tub that's lasted me 3 seasons so far (~14,000 mi) and there's still about 1/4 tub left. IMO as good as Paceline or Assos stuff.

People pay for chamois cream?

Machka 10-08-18 12:13 AM

I spent one summer testing various creams.

I'd apply one ... and then go for a 100 mile ride.

Next weekend, I'd apply the next one ... another 100 mile ride.

And so on through a whole bunch.

My conclusion: less is more. Actually much less is much more. None is practically perfect.

I do use a tiny dab of Ozonol once in a while if necessary, but that's about it.

I seem to have been born into the wrong family. Those Chamois Butt'rs don't appear gift wrapped at my door. I am a long time user of Bag Balm. Not all rides, not short ones but most of my long rides. When I use plenty of it, I have no issues at all or any issues I had already don't get worse. The delicate cycle wash gets it out of my shorts just fine. So I see no drawbacks at all beyond my wallet not fitting in my pocket quite so nicely. Plus it's available anywhere and has a shelf life opened rivaling Twinkies (and probably a lot more nutritious though I won't be the judge).

Same reason CF frames cost so much.
R&D and most cyclists are suckers for marketing

Try Gold Bond friction defense. Sold at Walmart as well as other stores. Works as well as Body Glide. A lot cheaper.
