Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Winter Wear

Here in Central New York the weather has started to getter cooler and, if possible this year, more damp. I am looking for some advice on how to manage weather: What are other riders using for apparel to stay dry and warm, mainly torso and feet. And what are folks using for fender/mud guards if there bikes are not equipped with fender mounts (I am riding a Specialized Roubaix). Thanks in advance.

Dress in layers so you can peel things off when you get warm. Windproof toe/shoe covers and wool socks. Convertible jackets with sleeves that zip off are nice. If you don't have fender eyelets you can get something like in the picture that attaches to your skewers.

I use SKS Race Blades, which use a rubber mount to attach to the fork and the seat stays. They've never come loose.

BTW, for clothing I ride with some medium or heavier lined bib-style long leggings, a Gore Power 2.0 jacket (for cold weaather), "lobster claw" gloves, a ski helmet with vents you can close or leave open, and a pair of shoes 1/2 size bigger for two pairs of socks. I'm good down to the mid 20s.

Mud Krud makes a set of thin fenders for road bikes. The MK3's are ugly and expensive. I've a set of MK2's that looked much more inconspicuous, and they were half the price of the MK3's. You might be able to find a NOS somewhere.

I recently ordered a set of these to replace my MK2's, which are taking a beating right now with the fall twigs on the ground.:
Zefal Shield R30 Mudguard Set | Chain Reaction Cycles

Not sure how well they'll sit with the tires, or how easy they are to install, but they look decent enough.

Ha, I was thinking the same thing. "Tell me what to wear when it's cold out, go!". For me, it's always my feet and hands. Too cold and I'm miserable, too hot and it's gross and clammy. I have several different shoe/toe covers, and several types of gloves, from liners to lobster claw style. Here in NorCal, we don't get a real winter, so I don't need anything fancy for the rest of my body, it only gets cold enough to need options for feet and hands.
