poll: bike shorts under office clothes all day?
Right now I'm commuting 7km round trip to work on my bike everyday on my old beater bike without bike shorts. Once things in the new office get settled down, I had planned on riding my C'dale to work and doing a ride at lunch time. I'll probably just ride to and from work in street clothes with my riding shorts in my bag and then just changing into them at lunch and then back out after the ride.
I know it's generally not a good idea to stay in a pair of sweaty shorts after riding, but does anybody just wear their riding shorts underneath their work clothes all day?

I work a summer job at Arby's and I've worn my shorts under work clothes a couple of times. Besides the whole wearing sweaty old shorts around all day thing, it's just plain uncomfortable to walk around in bike shorts. That, and my pants kept sliding around on the lycra.
I kept wondering if the pad made my butt look nicer, though.

It would look like you were wearing a super duty jumbo sized pad... you would be the center of attention at the office cooler. Those stories last forever.

Riding in bike shorts. needed comfort. just gadding about. eventually would feel too restrictive. I wash out my shorts at work, because the ride home would be miserable.
ugh..putting on sweaty , smelly shorts. 12.5 hour shift. plenty of time for lycra to dry out.
however, I have slept in clean bike shorts on bike/camping trips. slept just fine. had to, my street clothes were wet.
just too gross if sweaty/smelly and forced to work in them all day.
I do have an on-going fear. I get to work and my work clothes are not there. that would be awful.

That would be SO gross!
In other news, I showered *yesterday*, went on a nice 20 or so mi. ride today, came back tonight, to trader joe's and did some shopping, and I smelled bad. I stunk. Whoo-ee stinky biker. I felt kinda bad about it, but then once of the wonderful, lovely, never-exert-yourself Indian ladies shopping there walked by me and she has a stink on her that made me smell like a rose!
Yes I showered when I got home.

Heah. is shopping at Trader Joe's a cyclist thing. Going to Trader Joe's on the way home is a common thing to me..they don't act surprised. in fact, the only use of plastic bags, I am convinced is for their cyclist shoppers.
they usually don't deal in Earth Unfriendly plastic, unless the shopper is taking home their goods in bike panniers. their large paper sacks don't fit in the average pannier.
usually, when I stop by Trader Joes's it is before the commute home rush, so I don't usually smell up the line. plus, one Trader Joe employee at my store is an bike commuter. wonder if Trader Joes' has showers for its employees.

I'm shocked it has taken 11 posts to mention womens underwear or freeballing.
Disgraceful. I expect much higher standards on this forum.

My commute is only 5 miles each way. I sit behind my desk in full kit. We are very informal at my job. It actually gets alot of discussions started about cycling, so it is pretty cool. I leave my bike in back and sometimes people ask to see it. I DO wash up in the bathroom as soon as I get there, though

Where do you work that allows you to sit there in full kit?

Oh, and no way would I sit around in the shorts for the whole day. If I take them off when I get to work, they're usually ok to ride home in. I'll really hot summer days I'll sometimes bring in a second pair of shorts for the ride home (12-14 miles each way).

I have done this. The reason is that if you don't want to wear your work pants on your bike and you have no place to change, you need to be wearing something that the pants will go over without too much bulk. (or just strip down on the street and change pants -- but I prefer not getting arrested on my way to work.) I prefer shorts with as thin a pad as possible anyway, so there is no "diaper" effect.
Not a bad idea to change them out for some sexy women's panties in a stall when you get to work . . . uh, i mean . . . macho men's boxers . . . or maybe some Tight White brand underpants.
This post should be in the commuter forum. I suspect you will get decidedly different poll results there.

oh and let me add an unsolicited piece of advice -- use purell and/or baby wipes to freshen up. the purrel kills lots of bacteria and leaves you quite dry. and it comes in little travel bottles.

For the guys, if you're concerned about your sperm count, it's all about temperature control. So, go forward with caution:

I'd be curious to find out how many people in the commuter forum do this on a regular basis.
