Specialized Body Geometry Gel Gloves

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Specialized Body Geometry Gel Gloves

Due to wear I was recently forced to retire the bike gloves that I've been wearing since the late 80s. They were extremely comfortable and well broken in...and, well, I'll miss them. I've never had problems with numbness or blistering.

Based on numerous recommendations, I replaced them with Specialized Body Geometry Gel gloves. I tried on mediums, and they were too tight -- I could feel the fabric digging in between my fingers -- so I went with larges.

After about 12 miles my fingers were numb. Between my fingers it hurt like the bejeezus where the fabric had bunched up. The heel of my right hand (below the ginormous gray pad) was raw and stinging. It was relief to get the gloves off, and I finished my ride without them.

Did I size them wrong? I'm interested in hearing if anyone else has had similar problems, and what you did to solve them. Did you try other gloves? If so, what worked for you?

Thanks for your input.

Did you buy them online or something? Ok probably not. But even so were there no extra large sized ones there? Specialized even have extra-extra large sized gloves.
My bet is that extra large would probably fit you better.
I use the extra-extra large ones myself.

Quality of new ones now the same as the old ones. I have specialized geometry gloves 5 years old. The new ones are not the same quality. Gel etc not as good.

I have to admit, I did not try on the XLs. I'm not an XL guy. I'm barely an L guy for that matter....

Ya but you said your fingers were beginning to feel numb. Even if your able to fit into a large that doesn't mean its big enough for you. There should be a little bit of slack between the fingers and the glove. Not much but just a little bit should be there. Try the XL and see how it feels.

- did you find the pair of Specialized Body Geometry Gel gloves that fell off the back of my truck last week? (like an idiot i forgot to put 'em inside, and instead left 'em sitting on the bumper)...

- they're not cheap!

- but i did like them, and mine were XL... the only time i've had trouble with gloves was when there wasn't enough padding... sounds like the pads on your glove were pressing in the wrong area? plus, they shouldn't bunch around your fingers...

- seems like there's no standard mold for gloves... i guess it'd be worse if we carbon life forms had different number of digits as well...

- i'd check out some other gel-type gloves from other vendors... you can get a good pair of gloves at a reasonable price... i replaced my lost pair with these, even though they're not gel (i use good bar tape):

The Pearl Izumi gels I had last year were very comfortable, but didn't hold up that well. To be fair, I didn't wash them very often, either. Switched to Body Geometry gels last year and they've been good-guess they fit me well.

I've got a pair of last years model and they have been nothing but great for me. I know mine streched out after I wore them a few times - maybe give them a couple more tries before completely giving up.

I ride with my Trek gloves on and they work good, I will probably have to get a new pair in a season at most but I will go for something simular as they have been comfortable and they also have saved my hands on more than one occasion.

I had some Nashbar gel gloves that used to bunch up like that, and they caused my hands to go numb as well. They were a size large, and in hindsight, they were probably a tad bit too large for me. It sounds like you're having the same experience with the bunching up of the heel. I recently bought a pair of medium Pear Izumi Pittards and they fit a little snug, but not too snug. They don't bunch up like the Nasbar gel gloves, the pads stay where they need to be, and my hands don't go numb.
