Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saturday -- Rowan has been busy gardening etc all week and was a bit tired today, so I ran and rode my trainer.

Beach Run
Distance: 3.04km
Elevation 24m
Moving Time: 20:27
Elapsed Time: 20:27
Pace: 6:43/km

Plus a slower 0.5 km run up a hill.

Zwift
I started riding ... then somehow turned around ... and got lost ... and was suddenly on L'Alp de Zwift doing this massive climb!!! I wanted to turn around but couldn't remember how I did it earlier in the ride. Oh well ... I got partway up!

Distance: 16.41km
Elevation: 400m
Moving Time: 1:15:15
Elapsed Time 1:15:46

Speed ... Avg 13.1km/h | Max 49.3km/h
Heart Rate ... Avg 140bpm | Max 157bpm
Cadence ... Avg 72 | Max 105
Power ... Avg 90W | Max 169W

Plus a little bit of upper body weight lifting.

Me on Zwift

Fires burned a whole town to the north- air quality bad. Bailed this morning's ride.

Will try tomorrow with a respirator.

The whole thing has been dreadful, woodcraft. Good luck and management for your and others' safety.

I have been through serious bushfire experiences in my life... the first in the 1960s in Tasmania killed a lot including one of my parents' friends.

The second in 2009 in Victoria destroyed much around me, and killed over 170, including many in a nearby town, Marysville, that was one of my favorite cycling training destinations. The place where I lived was destroyed, as was the main home on the farm where I worked.

My heart to anyone in California subject to the disaster. Be patient about riding... it took me a a few month to get at least a little enthusiastic again.

Did the same ride as last Sunday and the one before. It's a good ride Last week was my first ride on a roadbike in over a year and the first with the Basso in 3 years? It needed setup changes and was a much better ride today. My fitness seems good, better than expected at this point.
Nice warm to hot day slightest breeze

The church dunny

The flowers are drying up as it's starting to get really hot. Have to try harder next time to find them

Not quite as smoky as yesterday.

Fun party last night of #2 bike club- good food, company, music at a very fancy house.

Respirator worked OK- not conducive to really hard efforts, & have to stop & remove helmet to get a drink.

Sunday: I finished up working and got ready to ride with an hour of daylight left - my first recreational ride in the light since the time change last weekend.

I went and explored a bit in a small town about 12 miles to the south, stopped at a park by the Mississippi River, but left quickly due to a lot of gun shots. I believe it may be waterfowl hunting season.

Then...back up to town in the twilight, and a bit more riding around in the dark. Nothing too interesting, but miles! 36.2 miles, 784'; average temperature 30F.

The interesting little park:

Due to some personal matters, I have been on a sort of partial "off season" for the last three weeks, not visiting the forum as well as not training regularly (apart from the occasional short smart trainer routine or pushup/situp/squats filler). Also I started running as I have been feeling like I have hit a wall with cycling for a couple of months already, but kept noticing that the strong riders in my clique are often also duathlon or triathlon, so I thought maybe I'll give that a try.

So tried my first run on Tuesday, just couple of quick laps around my community. Three laps at steady pace with an all-out sprint at the last street, 3.09km, 6'12" avg pace. Legs sore for a couple of days after that.

Saturday, tried the same run again, 3.0km 6'27" avg pace (I blame GPS inaccuracies for the difference, it was practically the same run), but at least my legs no longer hurt as bad as the first time.

Wanted to join a fast group ride on Sunday, had all my lights, GoPro and cycling computer fully charged up, but had an annoying migraine attack for almost the whole day so I just stayed home resting and watching YouTube videos.

Fri: did the TGIF group on Zwift and Discord with the regulars that I chat with. Makes the hour go by real fast and is nice to talk to people from around the country. Did the "after party" up Fox hill and got myself a PR that was not quite expected.

Sat: rained fri night and was windy and chilly. Went out on the mtn bike with GF and another friend. didn't do a ton of miles but had some fun. Was supposed to be a high of 47 but halfway around it started freezing rain/snow/hail lol Temps dropped and we headed back out before we got too cold

Sun: Another day on the mountain bike with 2 friends on our normal loop One just got a new bike so he had some fun throwing that around. Had one minor wipe out when my front tire hit something slippery under a mud puddle. not hard but cold and wet landing.

I did my first metric century in some years. I'm in training for a short, light tour across Ohio come May.

This is SOO much more palatable than "land of the free because if the brave". Thanks Machka.

Saturday I went for a ride to Upper Tampa Bay trail for 40 miles. Sunday the weather turned to what I would call cycling perfect...65 - 75 degrees, sunny and light breeze. I rode to Flatwoods trail for 45 miles. Saw a deer too.

Well done seeds! Good to read you are back on BFs and you've become really active in planning the tour back in the old home country.
