Rims bent on the bus bike rack?!

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

on my way to work today I was looking at a MTB that was in the bike rack on the front of the bus... I noticed how it was bouncing back and forth just a little as the bus stopped and went..

this brings me to my question:

Have any of you put your bikes into the racks on a bus and it bent your rims even the slightest bit? I know there is a bar you move up to the top of your wheel and it braces the bike down, but when your rims are only an inch and a half thick it has to start to take effect... How did you prevent this, it is a use at your own risk kind of thing, public transportation isnt responsible for damage or loss of your bikes...

With this being said, If I buy a road bike should i not take the bus anymore? do you think it would damage my rims? Or should I just stick with a bike with larger rims like a MTB or something?

-- just bored curiousity..

I'd need to see a empty rack + rack with a bike on it to tell you.

I use those racks a lot, with my road bike with cheap alex rims that are supposedly crap (though I beg to differ).

I have had no problems. And the bus route I take is on a very bumpy freeway.

If my rims can handle my 210 pound butt doing bunny hops over RR tracks, I think they can take a little jostling on a bus.

absolutely... I ride the bus regularly with both of my bikes and have never had a problem.. I wouldn't worry about it in the least.
