Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I don't recognize most of these birds.* Possibly the turkey vulture?

Is the tropical mockingbird a cousin of your Tennessee state bird the mockingbird?

In addition to my chronic cough, today I got a message from the witch doctor office that I am slightly anaemic again.

When it rains, it pours.

Oddly she didn't say anything about my foot X-ray. Maybe she didn't want to give me bad news over the phone.

Speaking of GA, we got some of these. Not as bad as I'd anticipated.

Someone already drew up the defensive plans.

Graveyard of Peaches: How Tennessee Will Win Its War Against Georgia

In his book War at Every Door: Partisan Politics and Guerrilla Violence in East Tennessee, 1861-1869, historian Noel Fisher describes the way in which both Confederate and Union occupying armies struggled to comprehend the byzantine politics and grudges of East Tennessee and assert anything like political authority over such a lawless race of mountain people. I can almost pity the young Georgian men and women who would be asked to occupy as violent and confusing a place as southeast Tennessee. Alone at night, fearing yet another guerrilla attack and unsure of who they could trust among such an alien race, they would curse the greed of the Atlanta exurbs and the resource war that had been forced upon them. A prolonged occupation and insurgency stands a greater chance of transforming the internal politics of Georgia than transforming the immutable cultural truths of Tennessee.

Pretty remarkable that you can ID so many birds.* Can you recognize their calls?

Stupid forecast says snow to start tomorrow at 9:30AM. So I will likely have to cancel usual Wednesday fun ride. Question is do I get up super early and do a solo daybreak ride? Or hop on Zwift for fake miles?

Should I start a thread with a poll?

I vote fake miles. This time of year, daybreak is just rush hour and here the POP is 80% at 0600 hrs.

I have two Audible.com credits and a bunch of podcasts saved up for another few weeks of fake miles and a couple of transatlantic flights.

It's a hobby for some. When I toured from Seattle to Cortez, CO I rode and camped/stayed off and on for a week with a Mennonite couple riding a Bike Friday tandem across the country. The husband's hobby was recognizing birds by their calls. He was keeping a list of every specifies he heard. He learned by listening to tapes. He also knew them by sight. He was a great resource because I would describe a bird I saw that day and he would identify it.

They were a really nice couple. In Kremmling, CO we camped on a patch of lawn next to the old volunteer fire station. As dusk fell they wished me goodnight and said they were going "to work on our book." I thought "How can two people read one book?" After a few minutes I realized they were talking turns reading to each other inside their tent.

Helluva a strong couple, too. They dropped me for a bit climbing from Breckenridge to Hoosier Pass (11,512'). I managed to recover and catch back up. Keep in mind that they were riding a small wheel tandem towing a trailer.
