Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Given the Natty Boh reference I am guessing Maryland.

Dem Saints better get in gear or this year will end in even more disappointment than last year.

Speaking of the game, I'm trying to take a half-full perspective - no matter what, a team that I really dislike will lose.

For that breed, what type of things are in the Field trial?

No, just the usual snotty schools plus radical greenie orgs, the local All-Powerful Bike Lobby, and sailing crap. And it’s a clapped out 2004 Element with some amateur body work, which is a statement in itself.

Very cool.

Having a breed that's in the Non-Working Class, has its benefits. I stay warm, and they sleep.

well... so far rabbits are just one of a zillion scents out there. She seems to take no more interest in rabbit scent than anything else. She is always doing good things from a hunting perspective- puts her nose down, follows scent trails, is willing to follow a scent trail over doing other things (like chasing butterflies, frolicking aimlessly, searching for game with her eyes rather than nose etc), and she’ll leave me when she’s on a scent and expect me to follow. All good.

But I’m pretty sure she’s never seen a rabbit. She doesn’t get excited for rabbits like she does for squirrels or rats or possums or cats or raccoon, all of which she’s seen. I think if she could only see a rabbit, it would all change for her. I rounded up some friends and we went out and beat the brush and flushed six rabbits one morning! But she never saw them, she’s too short and couldn’t see over the brush. And the area was riddled with ground squirrel dens which she is obsessed with. So she had a great time trying to dig up ground squirrels and then we went out to breakfast.

In the field trials, I sometimes get lucky and she puts her nose down and follows the right scent trail. Sometimes she picks up something else equally interesting to her and follows that instead.

Only 1 more SoCal Field Trial weekend left, then we’re on hiatus until November, unless I travel to NoCal or Oregon with her.

So: I just ordered three dead frozen rabbits, they will arrive via FedEx in a couple of days. Normally these rabbits would be used to feed snakes or raptors or animals in a wildlife rehab. I’m going to lay some scent trails with frozen bunnies and then let her “catch” the “prey”. We’ll see if that sparks a fire in her.

If not, there’s always ratting. No training necessary there.

Dachsunds in field trials are run on rabbit.

They can also compete in Earthdog, which is underground ratting (rats are unharmed, in a cage).

In real life hunting they are used on rabbit and birds and denning animals like groundhog and fox. But that’s east coast stuff. The western version of the groundhog is the marmot, which lives in rocky crevices that foil doxies, and in the west, coyotes displace most fox. Plus rattlesnakes hold up in abandoned dens, you don’t want an excited dog sticking their face in one once the weather gets warm. In Europe, the rabbits live in dens commonly so doxies are used on those rabbits too, underground. But the dens are very small and it requires a sub-mini doxie to get into the dens. They call them kainenchen dachshunds.

Dachshunds are also used for blood tracking- ie someone wounds but does not kill a deer and can’t find it. Bring in the doxie. And they are used in falconry. The dog who won Open Dogs today is owned by a pro falconer. He got the dog to work with his raptors in his business.

In short, they have good noses and are good on above ground game that doesn’t go too far or underground game/pests of “just so” size.

I remember visiting the original store in Raleigh or somewhere in about 1983, where I bought two wind-front jackets at a great price and in a heinous color combination. Black and orange, if I recall. Marygold, perhaps.

He is the GOAT, and that's why I wouldn't mind seeing him win it all one last time... I feel like his window is closing, so the sooner the better.

And as much as I dislike the Saints, Drew is one of the best of all time and he deserves to have one more under his belt, too.

Now watch it end up being a Rams/Chiefs SuberBowl.

CJ Anderson and Talib, just because the Broncos are idiots for letting them go.

Andy Reid, because Andy Reid.
