I got a call from Heidi yesterday at 9AM. She had a flat tire. I rescued her. The rear tire was totally shredded, I am not sure if she hit something or just got a flat and kept driving on it until she was on the rim. I had to put the donut on and take the wheel to the tire store for a new tire.

The amazing part of the story is that she finally pulled over only 3 blocks from home and was going to wait for assistance because she didn't want to walk 3 blocks in the pouring rain. She had already driven more than 3 miles on the tire. What would another 3 blocks have done? My mom, rest her soul, wasn't always the best decision maker.

A better decision than driving at 70 mph in urban highway traffic with a spacesaver spare on the front. I see this at least twice a year and I don't commute by car.

It was 3 residential neighborhood blocks. Literally around the corner and up the street. She could have even come through the alley to cut down street driving.

No way to know if a certain shop has this or not, without asking. Making you feel obligate to buy from that shop is part of the plan. Over the decades I learned what I need in a saddle.
I have wide sit bones, I am most comfortable on wide saddles with a flat area around the sit bones. That part has to be flat even if the nose goes a little up tp get it. 6 of my bikes have nearly the same saddle. The same with minor changes over the model years. It was just trial and error for a long time. I always measure the top of the seat to the BB and to the bars, and make them the same as much as I can. Same for the seat angle. I then write it down. Some feel the same with minor differences.

Nota bene! Anyone who rides in an aggressive position, with the pelvis rotated forward, sits on the ischeal or pubic rami, NOT the ischeal tuberosities (sit bones). The rami converge anteriorly to the tuberosities, so if your bars are low, what you're actually sitting on is narrower.

I can probably do that. Actually, when I last had an X-ray I should have asked if they could do a measurement. That would be extra precise.

I generally ride with hands on tops or hoods. That would be sit bones, right?

Is there any other anatomical rule of thumb in looking at a particular style beyond width? Seems to me that cutout options are determined via trial and error.

Google "Sit on it, Potsie" etc....a common insult used on that show and, presumably, in the 1950's.

I had my sit bones measured when the Specialized gizmo first came out many years ago and purchased a Toupe in the 143 size as measured and have been riding Toupes since on every upright that I've owned and that's quite a few.

Everything except writing it down. What a novel idea. Except that I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I ride narrow saddles. It took me a long time to figure this out, but once done, my riding comfort improved.
