Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

About 4 miles in to my ride, I realized that I'd forgotten to bring a water bottle. Early season flub. Good thing that I #HeedTheVol and I had pre-hydrated. Rather than stop at a convenience store, I just decided to ride conservatively. Also, this put me over 100 miles for the week

Despite the wind, I want out and did a few miles outdoors today. I have this recollection of a simpler era where all you had to do at the start of the season was to pump up the tires and go. Now the start of the season starts with making sure all of the batteries are charged, firmware updates, map updates, making sure the wifi/bluetooth pairings are still working, and whatnot. I suppose I should have anticipated this and done a lot of this while the weather was crummy, but we were kind of busy...

On the house front, we have a buyer for our house in DC - settlement is coming up the week after next. We have a contractor addressing the "issues" found during inspection. Moving date is later this coming week, but there isn't that much that remains in the house that still needs to be packed. After all that, life returns to normal .

I survived ride two. I could barely sit on the saddle and I’m having some discomfort in my Achilles’ tendons. Other than that, all is going well considering I’m starting over.

In my experience, achilles tendon pain is directly related to my saddle being too high.

The Trek thread fell off page one. Thank goodness. I hope like the hype, it’s history.

Yeah, I’m just afraid to adjust it since it’s not hurting my knees or ankle.

I’m pretty happy with myself. I figured it would take a moth or so to do those climbs. I guess losing 68 pounds and doing cardio for 60-90 minutes a day, five days a week, for the last five months was worth it.

A gal on our team raced her first crit yesterday. She's the multi-time state champ in hill climbs and road racing, so she's decided to branch out, and go for the Road Cup, which is best three finishes in all the disciplines. We had a crit clinic with another teammate, and he just happens to be a world champion in quite a few different disciplines. He did a great job, but he was a bit more advanced than I expected. I could see there was some confusion, and after the clinic I offered to ride the course with her one night last week. I was careful to cover the basics, then take the corners faster and faster, with her following, or me following her, in order to see what's up. She was happy, and it seems between the two different "clinics", something stuck. She finished second, and that's just cool. It helps to consist of legs and longs, but crits are a different ballgame.

Well the wife took one look at the high chair, still in process, and threw a hissy fit. Then she went to pinterest, found one with the exact same dimensions, and said "You should have made this one". She's upset because I looked at a number of plans and then went my own way with what I'd learned. That kind of thing is just not done! What were you thinking? I offered to let her have at it, with her better knowledge of how to do it. She passed.

Maybe the family which owns it should have a close look at what has now emerged about Kristy Kreme.

Incredible though it seems, Mr H is the reason we choose that spot.

Odd as it may seem, I have a long history of felines in my families, including Siamese and Abyssinian breeds, and Machka has had a couple a totally faithful cats, too. We rent at the moment, and pets aren't allowed. But there are a couple of neighboring cats that we are nice to meet and greet and that keeps Machka and me reasonably happy. Along with Mr Higgins.

My wife and I had a couple alley cats until we got a pair of oriental shorthairs. For those here who aren’t familiar, oriental shorthairs are basically colored Siamese with the same physical traits but can be solid, striped, etc.

Alas, we’ve had no more cats since the birth of our youngest grandson due to allergies. I guess we could get a hairless cat. Maybe some day.

Yes, also Betty Friedan, Gary Richrath of REO Speedwagon, and Spanky McFarlane of the 60s band, Spanky and our Gang, amongst others.

are you a native peorian? If so, why aren't you included on the list?

I was born there, sort of, but have never lived there. Near there, but never in Peoria or even the Peoria side of the river.

Maybe he is out looking for PCAD and the PenMan?

Or alternatively, could be too sick to post.
