Addiction LXXIII

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speaking of French Shower, at the start of today’s ride I gave brief instructions: “don’t be a French shower.”

Wow. It's 60º here and I'm going to dig out a pair of not-not-bibs for a bare legged ride.

Regarding Keen cycling shoes. I know nothing of the current model(s) but the original Keens for cycling were ultra-narrow and I couldn't begin to wear them.

I wouldn't buy them just because one time when I visited the states, EVERYBODY was wearing them. And carrying around those little 8 oz stainless steel bottles, that are so small as to be useless for anything more than to show that you are a victim of peer pressure.

It's like you were never a cyclist. That's not even their expensive model.

I could use one for my truck...

I just did some very basic research on the road morph and came away unimpressed. My first impression was that many of my bikes don't have bottle bosses (3 of 6), so a pump that size is pretty useless to me. A mini I can keep in a pocket, An HPX4 fits beautifully under the top tube. I am also not a fan of the faux foot and fold out handle. I've used that type of pump before and didn't take to it.

Speaking of hoarding, my order of 10s Ultegra chains came today. I bought 6, but 3 are for a friend.

That should keep me going for another 12K miles or so.

How many boxes of shifter cables did you buy? To keep you going with more than one gear?

True story: The first time that I used my first Road Morph many, many years ago was when we had a rear flat on a century at about the 25 mile mark. I pumped the tire and it seemed like I couldn't get more than 110# in it so I gave up and decided that would have to do. For the next 50 miles, my wife kept complaining about her rear end and how bumpy the roads were. Finally, we were at a rest stop and I asked the sag guy to check the air in the tire while I hit the John. Came back and he said he let 40# out and I was still at 125#. We had been running at 165# because the Road Morph's gauge stuck at around 110 and I kept pumping. Glad the heavy duty tandem rim could handle 165.

After that, I learned to just tap the gauge at 110 and if didn't move, give it 10 or so pumps and quit.

I had planned to take a rest day especially since we are having 25 mph gusts earlier but I couldn't turn down the 63º weather and a chance to wear not not-bibs. So I spun over to the Illinois River bluff to a spot I haven't visited since i was a wee lad, Fort Creve Coeur established in 1680. The fort was very small and a replica is built there to show its simplicity and how the original was built.

I think I have 3 or 4 RD shift cables on the pegboard. They are easy to buy from EBay. Would love to go electric shifting some day.

Another reason I don't need one. I never go over 100. But the HPX4 is rated to 174, in case I ever need it.
