So my Trek dealer texts me at 9 o'clock tonight to say that I may wish to cancel / hold my Project One Madone SLR order because of Trek's announcement that "A change like this comes along once every 30 years" and this will "change cycling forever".

I say Graphene or 3-D printed. Or both. I read something about a 3-D printed frame somewhere. It was presented as a good way to make custom frames.
I remember hearing about something that will change transportation for ever...………...it was the Segway.

You can plan your route at home on the PC and buy a new Garmin that doesn't even have a screen to drive robobike on your training route. For an extra $29.99 you can live stream the cameras to the cloud host of your choice.

Maybe they're announcing their sale to Giant. That'd fit the size of the rhetoric.
But here are my other guesses:
1. The road dropper seat post
2. dual sided road clipless pedals
3. heartrate monitor handlebar tape
4. bib skorts
5. Cranksets that say Bontrager on them
6. A Blendr compatible phone case
7. Sock based powermeter
8. Top tube water bottle mounts
9. Project One now available as a sticker
10. Y-Foil 2.0

For a more serious guess, after looking at their Insta, I'd say they're going to layer in cellulose nanocrystals. They're the tiny tubes that lend a tree its strength. It turns out this stuff has some significant advantages over carbon. At least according to articles like this: https://newatlas.com/cellulose-nanoc...-kevlar/23959/
A lot of people are guessing kevlar or graphene, but graphene seems way too expensive and kevlar has been around forever. Unless you drag your bike ashore on the gravel beach, like a kayak, you're probably not going to get more out of kevlar than you do carbon fiber.

Some people in Finland say they built the first nanocellulose bicycle early last year. Here it is: Nanocellulose Bicycle | ideas2cycles
It's worth noting, too, that Forest Products Laboratory, which has a big presence here in Madison, Wisconsin -- not far from Trek -- announced not too long ago that they've opened a big nanocellulose ... uh... plant.
Trek took to carbon right away, and they also made a 2006ish Madone with Boron in the weave. I could see them plunge into this technology. Can't say what its performance will be as a material, but if it works, sure makes a nice story. Good green material.

My guess - New material : Carbon nano-tubes (CNT).
Same strength as CF, at less than 1/20th of the weight. Google it.

If it's a new material, which seems to be the general consensus, then they could be testing it in the guise of production bikes and no one would know the difference (unless they picked one up and felt how much lighter it is).
