Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yep, and the deeper the rims, the louder the noise. They amplify wheel noises like the body of a string instrument.

That reminds me; I think I’ll ride my Giant with the 55 mm carbon rims, today. Whoosh-whoosh!

Good club ride today. You may recall last year some Joker would push the pace and end up breaking the group into two. He is up to his old tricks, but we had enough riders for each group so it was fine.

I got pulled over by a cop on the way to the ride. Apparently the Saturn’s rear brake lights are not working (only the center high one works), kinda funny to burn out two bulbs at once, but I do hope it’s just a bulb issue and not some clustefark switch/electric problem.

I also learned that, at least in my state, if you get this type of citation and have it fixed within 5 days, there is no fine.

Lawdy. Some guy on the local FB cycling group is complaining about someone (a "boomer" wannabe racer, according to him) passing him on the MUP as a sprawling group of oncoming cyclists approached, making for a close call. Further inquiries reveal that the OP was motoring along at 23 mph, according to him, that he didn't signal the oncoming hazard and didn't slow his pace, despite the oncoming riders crossing in to his lane, until he was forced to slam on his brakes so that the passer wouldn't get into a collision. As if *he* weren't just as guilty of MUP racing as the other guy. Goodness.

So the bad news is the Saturn’s brake bulbs were totally rusted in the sockets and I had a challenge getting them out with needle nose pliers. There was gnashing of teeth and wringing of hands and shedding of tears. The good news is I got them out and new ones in. Works fine.

In a younger car I would have. The Saturn is so old I think it wouldn’t even know what to DO with an LED.

No luck finding much.. even the Merlin brand decals out there are the old logo.. My current label is 'melting' away.. I have a 2003 which I think is the year prior to engraved.. my luck, but I think they jacked the price for the 2004 so I may not have sprung for it anyway.

Oof. So this guy is ranting about "boomers," "aggro roadies," "privileged old ****s," etc, etc. Yeah, so I looked him up on Strava. He's there. So is his ride. Because of course. This ride? Total, 100% MUP racer event - winds through the streets a few miles from home to the path, hammers it out with average moving speed of over 20mph on the MUP on a nice, early spring evening when tons of people were out for a stroll or headed home from work. And then he complains about someone passing him in an unsafe manner.

Currently 87°. Feels like 90. Fans are blowing from two sides. 102 tomorrow. I think I'll take a few days off from riding.

New York has "fixit" tickets too. They give you more than five days though.

LOLWTFBBQ. A little earlier, I called out that guy on FB about the hypocrisy of his MUP racing antics. I just checked again, his response: delete the FB thread and change privacy settings on Strava.
