Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

There was Royal Castle too, preceding White Castle.

We had Royal Castle in New Orleans BITD. I always thought it was the knock off, not the original. But who knows? And weren’t their burgers square?

Really? WC is suuuuper old school. They've been around since forever. I don't think that anyone here is old enough to have been around before WC, not even Robert.

Edit: I see that WC was founded in 1921, so maybe I was wrong about the Robert not being around.

Also, this is cool - the photo on the WC wiki page is that of a building a couple miles away from me -

Wiki indicates that it was WC #8 . I obviously knew that it was old, but I hadn't realized that it was that old.

The closest WC to me is 50 miles, two counties away, where I used to work. So whenever I'm down that way I make it my business to stop at WC for the day's lunch, and then I stop at my favorite deli to pick up the next day's lunch - the best Italian combo sammich on the planet.

When I was growing up in New Jersey, we had a WC in the town next to us, but it was a "treat" not a regular thing, to go there. Loads of delicious little square burgers by the bag full 😋

Meet me on Decatur Street in New Orleans and we will put the lie to that claim at the Central Grocery.

I'm still a little shocked when I spend more than 6 bucks there. When I was a kid, if one of my friends or I got our grubby little hands on a few dollars, we could buy enough food to share among us.
